MUS FYS 102 Sections Annoucement | 12/1/11
Email from Chris Macklin

I hope your semester is going well.  I know we’re getting down to the wire, but in talking to some people it seems like there fairly wide-spread confusion about whether, what, when, and why the “Music –specific” or music-focused FYS 102 class is, so I thought I would send out an email giving some information and answering some of the more common questions. Please feel free to circulate this and tell your departmental colleagues.

First of all, yes, the class is happening, and there are 2 sections:

FYS 102.023 MUS meets MWF 11-11:50 and F 12-12:50

FYS 102.024 MUS meets TuTh 9:25-10:40 and F- 12:50

(the two sections meet together on Fridays)

Note that, although these sections have are flagged as “MUS” designation, this does not mean that they are ONLY open to music majors. Anyone can take the class, provided they are interested in music and have:

1)      The ability to read Western classical music notation

2)      Participated in band, orchestra, or choir in middle school, high school, and/or college for a minimum of two years

Note also that music majors are not absolutely required to take these sections of FYS 102.  If, for example, a student is currently in FYS-X and love their teacher and wants to continue in the spring, that is a choice open to them.  We do, however, strongly recommend that music majors take one of these two sections, for reasons I’d be happy to share if you email me.

For further info, here is an excerpt from the Course Objectives and Outcomes on the syllabus.  The last sentence of the first paragraph make be of particular interest.

Course Objectives and Outcomes

This course constitutes the second semester of Mercer’s First Year Seminar program, with a particular focus on the arts and intended primarily for music majors (or those with a similarly serious interest).  As such, it simultaneously aims at two objectives. First, it provides all Mercer University undergraduates a shared experience of engaging with texts through thoughtful reading, writing, and discussion. We will thus read several texts that all other sections of FYS102 are also reading, and develop the strong academic communication skills (reading, discussing, researching, and writing) required for further study across the university.  The second objective is to demonstrate how each of these ideas resonates within the academic study of music, and thereby provide a framework for linking what artists do with “the fingers” (or lungs, or lips, or feet) with “the brain”.  Although you do not need to be a music major to take this course—indeed, interested non-majors may contribute and benefit the most!-- there is thus a strong disciplinary focus congruent with the aims of the Townsend School of Music.

The course title, “Engaging the World”, is a natural extension of the issues raised in the first semester of FYS.  Where FYS 101 asked you to explore how we construct and understand personal identities, this class will challenge you to take those ideas of “self” and project them outward into the larger world, and how we can and should interact with the world around us. In many ways, this class can be seen as a sustained exploration of the idea "Finding The Self in The Other, and The Other in Self". In other words, the fundamental goal of the class is to explore, and sometimes confront, the ways that the arts and music engage with concepts of group identity (be it racial, cultural, or national). We will place particular emphasis on the cultural loci of the USA and Southeast Asia.

If you have a student who is uncertain whether they should take this class, please get in touch ASAP.

Regards,

-Chris

CampusVue Update: Red Light Until Registration Time | 11/10/11
Email from Tony Kemp

When you release the advising hold for a student, the light at the top of the CampusVue screen will continue to be “red” if the student’s registration time has not yet occurred.  Don’t panic; as long as you have released the advising hold, students should be able to register at their designated time.  (Of course, if students have other holds because of fines, tuition past due, missing immunization records, etc., they should work to clear them before registration or their access will continue to be denied.)

MyMercer for Students: Checking Status of Classes | 11/10/11
Forwarded Email from Kim Morgan, Assistant Registrar

They can access the CampusVue course schedule before their registration time.

Log-in to MyMercer

Go to CampusInfo > Course Schedule

Make sure to check the “Open & Closed” radio button to see courses that are full

Limit the search if they’d like

When the course pops up, click “View Detail” and it will show if the class is full, etc.

Follow-Up Note From Tony Kemp

Students can check to see how classes are filling in MyMercer after they have had their advising appointment with you.  This could help them prepare (and not panic) in case they need to consider their alternate plans during registration.  See Kim’s instructions below.

CampusVue Update: Enrollment Based Unofficial Transcript | 11/10/11
Email from Tony Kemp

FYI…

You should now have permission to use the “Enrollment Based Unofficial Transcript” from the “Final Grades” folder.  This is a condensed version of the “Academic History and Advising Report” that some of you might be using during advising.  (It’s usually fewer pages and looks more like a transcript.)

SCI 105 Update | 11/9/11
Forwarded Email from Dr. Ed Weintraut, Associate Dean

Please keep in mind that Spring 2012 (next semester!) is the last time that SCI will be offered. If you have advisees who still need this course, make sure they enroll in it as quickly as possible so that we do not have a run on seats at the very last minute.

A related item: some students may wish to declare formally their desire to switch form the old catalog to the new catalog (coming out next year, with the new GenEd Program, hopefully). The form for this declaration can be found on the Faculty Docs page

Pre-Med Co-Enrollment Opportunity for students who were not calculus ready this fall | 11/8/11
Forwarded Email from Dr. Linda Hensel, Biology Department Chair

A co-enrollment opportunity for students who were not calc ready this fall, but will pass MAT 133 with a C or better this semester has been created. Students may co-enroll with permission from BOTH Dr. Hugdahl and Dr. Kot in

BIO 211.007 plus CHM 111.014

Or

BIO 211.008 plus CHM 111.013.

(Similar to earlier announcements regarding the CHM 111 sections with Dr. Hugdahl, students who are interested in this BIO 211 opportunity should e-mail Dr. Mary Kot for permission.)

We have saved seats for students that want to attempt this rigorous load. They should be warned, however, that attempting both of these courses together will be incredibly demanding.

BIO 211 & CHM 111 | 11/8/11
Email from Tony Kemp

FYI: For those students who are currently taking MAT 133 in order to start chemistry in the spring, there is a plan to schedule a section of BIO 211 that will have the co-requisite of the special must-have-approval-to-take section of CHM 111.  (Ultimately, this should mean that CHM 112 would be the only science course that these students would need to take in Summer 2012 if they wanted to truly be “back on track.”)  As we receive more specific information, we will pass it along, too.

Advising & Registration Reminders | 11/7/11
Email from Tony Kemp

As you dive into the thick of advising, we have compiled additional reminders and notes that might be helpful.  Please find attached the document for Spring 2012 advising and registration and the item that we distributed this summer and early fall (for placement exam interpretation, etc.).  As always, please continue to call or e-mail us if we can be of further assistance.

Students Beginning CHM 111 in Spring 2012 | 11/2/11
Notice from Dr. Jeff Hugdahl, Chemistry Department Chair

Students who took MAT 133 this term in hopes of being able to start CHM 111 in the spring will need to be signed into the course by Dr. Hugdahl.  They can begin to obtain his signature now during his office hours found below.  (The Registrar’s Office can physically add students to the course on their registration dates with the completed forms if students have not scheduled potential conflicts with other courses.)

Monday 1-2

Wednesday 2-3

Thursday 11-12

Students who make a “D” or “F” in MAT 133 should contact Dr. Hugdahl about being placed on a waitlist for the course (if they are considering attempting to take the course again during  Spring 2012).  Discussion is under way regarding the addition of CHM 112 as a possible option for Fall 2012.  (This is not “written in stone” and will depend upon staffing issues for the department.)

Early Registration Email | 11/1/2011
Forwarded message from Lucy Wilson, Registrar

Here is where things are right now.

- The spring schedule as we have it in VUE will be on the web this afternoon.  Summer is there, too, but may not have ALL changes entered yet.

- We are still having trouble getting the registration time assignments in VUE as the system cannot deal with the special priority group as separate from the earned credits groups.  Kim is working hard to get that to work but will resort to the holds we did last term if needed.  We hope to have those groups completed on Wednesday morning.

 -   Once time assignments are done, we will be sending to Associate Deans the advisor lists showing advisees and their times to register.  Please distribute to your departments/advisors as we cannot get these split by departments and emailed separately at this time.

-  We will email to students the notices of date and time to register tomorrow after we get time assignments into the system.

-  We will email instructions about advising, using VUE, directly to advisors hopefully tomorrow, but no later than Thursday.  We will have registration forms and declaration of major forms available in our office for departments to pick up.

-  Advising officially begins on November 4.

Below are the dates and times for registration:

6:00 p.m. Thursday, 11/10 – Special

7:00 a.m.  Friday, 11/11 – Seniors

6:00 p.m.  Monday 11/14 – Juniors

6:00 p.m. Tuesday 11/15 – Sophomores

7:00 a.m. Thursday 11/17 – Freshmen

Please let me know if you have any questions.  FYI, Atlanta began registration for spring on MyMercer this morning and was very successful.
