Medicine  
Mercer University established the School of Medicine to improve the supply and distribution of primary care and other needed specialty physicians in rural and other medically underserved areas of Georgia. Students in the Medical School receive early patient care experiences and begin the clinical component of their education during their first year of school.

Highlight for this Academic Year: The School of Medicine continues to rank among the top medical schools in the country in percentage of graduates choosing a primary care specialty. In April 2001, the Medical School received a Silver Award, its 10th consecutive award, from the American Academy of Family Physicians for its success in making family practice a top career choice for graduating medical students. In addition, 57 percent of Mercer graduates are practicing in federally-designated Health Professional Shortage Areas in Georgia.
