Reporting an Honor Code Violation
Each student is responsible for reporting any and all infractions of the Honor Code. This responsibility is accepted by the student when he or she enters the University and is expected of him or her as a vital participant in the Honor System. The System is so dependent upon the student responsibility that shrinking from this responsibility is considered a serious violation of the Honor System.
The set procedure for reporting a violation is:
1. If a student sees, knows, or hears of an act of dishonesty, he or she is responsible for reporting this suspected violation to the professor concerned, to a member of Honor Council, or to anyone else who is in obligation of the student to see that the alleged infraction reaches the Honor Council as soon as possible. A list of current Honor Council members can be requested through email at HonorCouncil@Student.Mercer.edu.
2. A student, if he or she knows of or sees an act of academic dishonesty, may go to the student concerned and ask him or her to report the violation himself or herself, stating that if this is not done within a certain period of time, it will be reported.
3. A student should remember in any and all cases that his or her primary duty and obligation is to report the act to the Honor Council either directly or indirectly. Even in cases where there is only suspicion, the details of the suspicion should be divulged to the professor.
The Honor System rests with the students of the University. It carries with it a personal responsibility of individual honesty and the personal obligation of individual involvement to see that no violation goes unreported. The System cannot and will not work unless each and every student accepts his or her responsibility and exercises this responsibility.
