The Townsend-McAfee Institute

Welcome to The Townsend-McAfee Institute!

Welcome to The Townsend-McAfee Institute for Graduate Church Music Studies, created in 2005 as a collaboration with Mercer University's Townsend School of Music in Macon and McAfee School of Theology in Atlanta. TheTownsend-McAfee Institute prepares musical artists for ministry.

The Townsend-McAfee Institute offers four distinct degrees:

Master of Music in Church Music

Master of Music in Conducting (Choral or Instrumental)

Master of Music in Performance

Master of Divinity with a Concentration in Church Music

Professional performers and conductors who desire to be leaders not only in their musical discipline, but also in a local church or community music ministry may choose to add the "with an Emphasis in Church Music" designation to their degree.

The Townsend-McAfee Institute provides intensive training in the areas of scholarship, musicianship, leadership, discipleship and worship arts. The Townsend School of Music is an institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music, and all of its degrees prepare musicians to enter the field as a professional artist or continue studies at the doctoral level.

In additon, the Townsend-McAfee Institute fosters an environment of mentorship, empowerment, and collaboration.  Our students work with leading church music scholars, church musicians, conductors, and church leaders throughout the United States.  The Institute sponsors several small group meetings of church music leaders which we call the Mercer University Church Music Camerata.  Also, three significant collaborative projects help frame the Institute's mission:  Celebrating Grace: Hymnal for Baptist Worship, The YourthCUE/Mercer International Choir, and the Georgia Youth Choir Festival. Celebrating Grace: Hymnal for Baptist Worship will be published in 2010, the YouthCUE/Mercer International Choir meets every summer at Mercer University before conducting an extensive international tour, and the Georgia Youth Choir Festival involves over 100 singers and is a joint initiative of the Institute and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Georgia.

The Mercer Difference

As the only independent university of its size to offer programs in liberal arts, business, engineering, education, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, law, theology and music, Mercer offers more than 20 undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs in more than 60 major areas of study. Since 1833, Mercer University has provided students with nationally recognized excellence in education. This same intensity of purpose and intention are hallmarks of these graduate programs, where solid musicianship is cultivated within a rich academic environment. Mercer is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music.

The Townsend-McAfee Institute Graduate Studies in Church Music has been made possible through a gift from James and Carolyn McAfee. The program is named in honor and memory of Mrs. McAfee's parents, Sophia Malin Townsend and Raymond Clay Townsend.
