At 17, he entered the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.; during his student years he performed solo recitals in upper New York state and in south Georgia.
After finishing his formal training, Altman took a teaching position at Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y. While in Rochester, he played solo recitals and gave master classes in that area and in Canada.
In 1974, Altman took a position at Mercer University in Macon, Ga.
In 1979, Altman took a leave of absence from his academic duties at Mercer to pursue the doctor of musical arts degree at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he was a scholarship student of the reknowned Israeli pianist David Bar-Illan. He later continued his studies in Cincinnati with Frank Weinstock. Altman returned to Mercer in 1982.
Altman's recitals have taken him from coast to coast in the U.S. and feature a wide variety of literature. His programs range from works by Scarlatti to Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Prokofiev and other 20th Century masters. He also remains active in performances with his wife, cellist Barbara Altman. |
