Stanley L. Roberts is in his eleventh year as Director of Choral Studies at Mercer University, where he conducts the Mercer Singers (40 voices) and the 45-voice Mercer Women’s Choir, while teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in conducting. Since becoming director of The Mercer Singers that ensemble has sung on programs for the Georgia Music Educators Association, Southern Division of Music Educators National Conference, and made three CD recordings. The choir has an extensive concert schedule each year with local concerts and regional tours. Under his direction, the Mercer Singers have successfully toured internationally; England & Wales (2000), Italy (2002), Austria & Czech Republic (2004) and Germany, Poland, Slovakia, & Hungary (2006) with a tour to Japan scheduled for May 2007. He is a frequent guest conductor with the Macon Symphony and choirs under his direction perform annually with this regional orchestra.
A passionate educator, Dr. Roberts has been chosen as Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year (2001) and Professor of the Year (2004) by Mercer’s Student Government Association. Highly regarded as a conductor & clinician, he has conducted All-States and Honor Choirs throughout the United States as well as workshops in universities, colleges, churches, and schools.
An active church musician for 25 years, he also currently serves as Minister of Music at the First Baptist Church of Macon, Georgia. In 1994 he became the founder of jubilate! --a mass-choir experience for church youth choirs that gathers an annual group of some 200 singers. This group tours each summer and has performed throughout the southeast and at four national conventions of Baptist faith. Currently, Dr. Roberts is an editor for a new hymnal being published by Mercer University Press.
An engaged member of the Music Educators National Conference and the American Choral Directors Association, he has served in numerous leadership capacities for both organizations and is currently State President for Georgia ACDA. Dr. Roberts is a graduate of Mercer University and completed the degrees Master of Church Music and Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky. While at Southern Seminary, he was a Garrett Fellow and studied conducting with Dr. John Dickson.
