Mercer Strings
Stringed instrument instruction at Mercer is available upon audition for music majors and non-majors in violin, viola, cello and double bass from our faculty of international performing artists. Participation in chamber music is encouraged, with weekly coachings from string faculty and regular performance opportunities.
Mercer University President Kirby Godsey in Spring 2004 announced the appointment of renowned violinist Robert McDuffie to serve as Distinguished University Professor of Music. McDuffie will conduct master classes in violin and chamber music and offer other instructional activities involving promising young musicians. He will also give concert performances.
The Mercer University Orchestra is an audition-only chamber orchestra which performs three times a year in Mercer's state-of-the-art recital hall and Macon's Grand Opera House. Members of the orchestra are regularly invited to play solo concertos, and scholarships are available for orchestra participation. There are also opportunities for especially talented students to perform with the Macon Symphony Orchestra.
