2008: New Year! New Semester!! New Beginnings!!!
According to usa.gov the number one New Year’s resolution in 2008 is losing weight. If you are one of the millions of Americans that resolved to shed pounds, tighten muscles, or slide into that size 6, you may wonder, “how do I stick to my plan?”
Step 1: Make specific goals. Losing weight is too broad of an objective. Make it more specific. For example: “I want to lose 8 lbs,” “I want to be able to run 1.5 miles without stopping” or “I want to lift weights twice a week.” These are more specific goals. Now that you have a specific goal in mind, make sure that it is achievable. There is nothing worse than setting an extremely lofty goal and being discouraged because you can never achieve it. For instance, do not register for a 10K in two weeks when you can’t make it around the block without huffing and puffing. Make sure your goal is doable. Attach a time frame to your goal. For instance, “I plan to lose 8lbs by Spring Break” is a specific, achievable goal in a reasonable time frame.
With your goal in mind, Step 2: Create a strategy. In this case, create a workout schedule. Consult with your other schedules like class and work schedules. Pick specific times that do not conflict with other commitments. If you need extra motivation or need help getting started, sign up for a personal trainer, attend fitness classes or find a buddy with similar goals. When you create your strategy, commit to it! You can even create a written pledge that states that you will stick to your workout program unless an unforeseen event occurs. With this simple 2 step plan, I hope that your 2009 resolution will include something other than losing weight.
Fitness Gadget of the Month
Just when you thought there could be no better workout partner than your stylish ipod, Nike teams up with Apple to create the Nike ipod sport kit. Priced at $29, this sport kit comprises of two tiny gadgets: the wireless sensor and the dock connector. The tiny wireless sensor fits beneath the insole of your shoe while you plug the duck connector to your ipod nano. You are now free to begin your cardio workout. As you run or walk, the sensor sends information to your nano tracking the duration of your workout, distance, pace and calories burned. After your workout, you can sync your iPod nano to your MAC or PC and transfer your workout data to iTunes and nikeplus.com. You can even satisfy your competitive nature by challenging other runners to a virtual race.
