Nutrition Professor Available to Discuss New Food Labeling Law
On Jan. 1, a new law took effect that should help people with food allergies decipher the ingredient labels on
food items. More than 11 million Americans suffer from food allergies, and that number is predicted to increase. Mercer University Professor Brian W. Tobin, Ph.D.,
is available to talk with the media about what food groups account for the majority of allergic reactions, how to read food labels for possible allergens, and what is
missing from the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004. Tobin is chair of the Division of Basic Medical Sciences and professor of Nutrition,
Biochemistry and Pediatrics. He received his Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University, and served as a postdoctoral fellow pursuing endocrinology and metabolism research
in the Muttart Diabetes Research Training Centre and in the departments of medicine and surgery at the University of Alberta School of Medicine in Edmonton, Canada.
