Music Professor Available to Discuss Origins of "Tristan and Isolde"
With Valentine's Day around the corner and the romantic film "Tristan and Isolde" in theaters,
Dr. David Johnson, assistant professor of music for theory and composition, is available to discuss the original "Tristan and Isolde," Richard Wagner's
opera. Wagner forever altered the artistic world with his music drama about forbidden love. Wagner's "Tristan" is not just an opera, but a four-hour-long
"Gesamptkunstwerk" (the German phrase meaning "total art work") in which rising passions eventually lead to death.
Johnson began studying violin at age three and piano and composition at age eight. He completed a bachelor of music in violin performance and composition
at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, a master of music in composition at Yale University, and a doctor of music in composition at Indiana University.
Some of Dr. Johnson's recent works include "Hero's Tragedy" for orchestra, and "Dramatic-Lyric" for organ. "Dramatic-Lyric" has been performed in Detroit, Atlanta, Indianapolis
and Bloomington, Ind.
