Professor Can Offer Helpful Hints for Science Fairs
Looking for a fresh perspective on an American tradition? As students gear up for the science
fair season, they'll be in search of the inside track. Tift College of Education Assistant Professor M. Randall Spaid, Ph.D., can offer expert
information for stories on science fair dos and don'ts. A middle and high school science teacher for 28 years, Spaid has judged science fairs as a teacher
and a professor. A leader in the field of science teacher education and science fairs, he serves as co-director of the Near East and South Asia Virtual
Science Fair project, an initiative he began two years ago to hold science fairs over the Internet for students at International Schools. In addition to
being a senior judge of the Georgia High School Science Fair for four years, Spaid is the president of the Southeastern Association for Science Teacher

Director Named for Physician Assistant Program

H.W. "Ted" Matthews, dean of Mercer University College of
Pharmacy and Health Sciences, announced the appointment of Bradford W. Schwarz, MS, PA-C, as the director for the College's new Physician Assistant
Program. Schwarz previously served as associate director and assistant professor for the Physician Assistant Program at Emory University. |
At Emory, Schwarz shared responsibilities with the program director, including
strategic planning, implementation and evaluation, planning and monitoring budgets, and supervision and mentoring of faculty and staff. He also taught
courses in the areas of cardiology, EKG interpretation and professional issues. Schwarz holds certification from the National Commission on Certification
of Physician Assistants, and is a residency-trained aeromedical physician assistant for the U.S. Air Force Reserve.

Noted Economist Arthur Laffer to Speak in Macon, Atlanta
Arthur B. Laffer, Ph.D., noted economist and chairman of Laffer Associates, will be the featured
speaker at The Executive Forum of Mercer University next week. Laffer's economic acumen and influence in triggering a worldwide tax-cutting movement in the
1980's earned him the distinction in many national and international publications as "The Father of Supply-Side Economics." He continues his
groundbreaking work today in shaping economic thought and policy with the company he founded, Laffer Associates, an economic consulting firm. On Tuesday,
Oct. 24, he will give a dinner presentation at 6:30 p.m. at The University Center on Mercer's Macon campus, then on Wednesday, Oct. 25, he will give a lunch
presentation at noon at The Capital City Club in downtown Atlanta.

Cancer Research Laboratory Opens at Memorial Health University Medical Center
Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, which is a teaching hospital for Mercer University's
School of Medicine, celebrated the grand opening of a new state-of-the-art, 60,000-square-foot cancer research and education facility – dedicated the William
and Iffath Hoskins Center for Biomedical Research – celebrated its grand opening last week. One-third of Mercer's third- and fourth-year students complete
their medical education at Memorial. The new cancer research and education facility is designed for medical and translational research. Translational or "bench to
bedside" research allows scientists and physicians to work together to quickly translate laboratory findings into new cancer treatments or prevention techniques.
The $22-million, two-story building has 30,000 square feet of space devoted exclusively to cancer research, including research on the molecular genetics and biology
of cancer. The facility also includes classrooms for medical students from Mercer's School of Medicine.

Nursing Student Named Editor of National Nursing Publication

Mercer junior Laura Hudgens was recently named editor of Imprint, the official publication of the National
Student Nurses' Association.

Laura Hudgens, a junior at Georgia Baptist College of Nursing of
Mercer University, was recently named editor of Imprint, the official publication of the National Student Nurses' Association (NSNA). In this role, she will
be responsible for reviewing manuscripts, determining the magazine's focus for each issue, writing editorials, communicating with state and local chapter newsletter
editors and determining the agenda for the NSNA mid-year workshop.
Hudgens, a native of Albany, Ga., earned a degree in journalism at the University of Georgia.
She said her educational background combined with professional experiences in marketing, promotions, production and editorial make her role with the 45,000-circulation
Imprint a "natural fit." |
"I am excited I can use these talents through NSNA to further the goals of students and the nursing profession,"
she said.
Hudgens, a Piedmont Nursing Scholar at the College of Nursing, currently works in the emergency room at Piedmont
Hospital as a clinical partner. In addition to her journalism education, she has completed Certified Nursing Assistant training at Georgia Medical Institute and pre-nursing
courses at Georgia State University.
"A national office like this brings great prestige not only to Laura, but also to our entire College of Nursing," said
Dean Susan S. Gunby. "Laura is well-prepared to one day become the editor of a major nursing publication."
Hudgens is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold R. Hudgens Jr. of Albany, Ga. Hudgens and her husband, Jay L. Hedberg, reside in Atlanta.
