Expert Available to Comment on New Legislation Giving Nurses Prescriptive Authority
New legislation allowing nurse practitioners in Georgia to write prescriptions as of July 1 is awaiting Gov. Sonny Perdue's signature. Advanced practice registered nurses (APNs), who are already allowed to phone in prescriptions to pharmacies, are not allowed to put those prescriptions in writing. If the legislation is signed, Georgia will become the last state in the nation to approve such prescriptive authority for APNs. Dr. Freida Fuller-Jonap, professor at Georgia Baptist College of Nursing of Mercer University, is available to talk with the media about what this will mean for health care providers and their patients. According to Fuller-Jonap, the lack of prescriptive authority in Georgia has meant the loss of qualified APNs to other states, a trend that can hopefully be reversed with this new legislation.
