Nursing Professor Available to Discuss Summer Camps
Parents of children with a chronic disease need not rule out the summer camp experience. Sandra Shuler, assistant professor of parent-child nursing at Georgia Baptist College of Nursing of Mercer University, is available to talk with the media about special concerns for summer campers with diseases, including growth, development and psychosocial adaptation. In her course, Nursing in the Camping Setting, she helps nursing students learn to recognize the importance of meeting the child’s psychosocial needs, to distinguish between normal and abnormal growth and development, and to communicate effectively with campers and their health care teams. To successfully complete requirements for the course, Mercer students volunteer at one of three area camps for children with heart disease, diabetes and organ transplants. Shuler, whose area of specialty is child health, received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Baylor University and Texas Woman’s University.
