University Unveils Law and Public Service Program
Mercer University has instituted a Law and Public Service Program this fall designed to promote volunteerism and draw attention to public interest law. While housed at Mercer’s Walter F. George School of Law, the program is a University-wide initiative. Students throughout the University will have opportunities to engage in the community service while learning valuable lessons in cooperation.
The centerpiece of the program is experiential learning by students. Through new clinics and expanded public interest practicum opportunities, students will work on real cases and receive academic credit. In addition, the program coordinates and encourages volunteer community service and legal service opportunities by students, and assists students with summer placements in public service offices and in full-time public service careers after graduation. A central feature of the program will be finding opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and cooperation in service between law students and students in the other schools and colleges of Mercer. Douglasville Resident Preparing to Launch Second Career at Mercer University
LITHIA SPRINGS — Deborah Moreland decided four years ago she wanted something different. The successful real estate agent and broker of more than 30 years was looking for a new challenge and a way to give back. The Douglasville resident decided to change careers and her new path led her to Mercer University's Douglas County Regional Academic Center.
Today, Moreland is only one eight-week session away from graduating from Mercer with a bachelor of business administration. |

She plans to continue her education at a nearby university to earn her master's degree in business education, which she hopes to use in a new career in the field of education.
"I hope that one day soon I can use my education to encourage young people to believe in themselves and complete their education," Moreland said.
In the 1960s, Moreland spent one semester at college before growing restless and deciding to quit her studies to marry and begin a family.
"I just never seemed to find the time to return to school after I left college," Moreland said. "Instead, I began a career in real estate, and that career and my family took up pretty much all of my time. But I never lost my desire to complete my degree."
Moreland is completing her academic studies at Mercer in perfect form. She is on track to graduate with a perfect 4.0 grade point average, despite a decades-long hiatus from the classroom.
"When I first got into class, I just wanted to pass, but then I got an 'A.' So I tried to get another 'A' in my next class, and I did. It just kind of took off from there, it became my goal to get all 'A's,'" Moreland said.
In her time at Mercer, Moreland has made academics her number one priority. After 30 years of a real estate career she changed her focus to an academic career and put her energy into the new pursuit. Her success outside the classroom allowed her to become an academic explorer, and she took advantage of a number of opportunities at Mercer.
She participated in the Economic Policy Semester at American University in Washington, D.C., and interned at the U.S. Department of Education. In May 2004, she spent two weeks on a Mercer Study Abroad trip with her husband and a group of Mercer business students, traveling Europe and visiting companies and cultural sites in the Netherlands, France and Switzerland.
"My Mercer experience has been a dream come true," Moreland said. "When I began, I was scared to death, but, with each class I met a new professor, and each one of them were a different and a wonderful experience."
