Welcome to the College of Liberal Arts...
As the oldest college of the University, the College of Liberal Arts is the cornerstone of the academic programs at Mercer. Our faculty, staff, students and facilities are among the finest in the nation. While we conduct ground-breaking research and scholarly study, our focus always remains on providing our students the highest-quality learning experience in the classroom and beyond.
We seek to help students gain a broad range of knowledge as well as a life-long passion for learning. We understand the importance of developing good decision-making and ethical leadership skills. We believe in the power of each individual to make a difference in the world that only she and he can make.
The College has 115 full-time faculty and offers majors in 30 disciplines encompassing the natural sciences, social sciences, arts, humanities and communications. We also work with students to design an individualized course study that will serve them in their career and life goals.
The College is more than a set of academic departments. We agree with Albert Einstein in that we believe that it is not enough to teach a person a specialty. That can make an individual useful, "but not a harmoniously developed personality. It is essential that the student acquire an understanding of and a lively feeling for values ... and acquire a vivid sense of the beautiful and of the morally good."
We seek to educate broadly because we believe that a liberal education provides the best foundation for an examined life. In the global and complex society of this millennium, we believe that liberal arts students will be best prepared to live as responsible citizens who can provide intellectual leadership and caring service. In short, a liberal education is excellent preparation for a career - and for making a living. But its true goal is to help you make a life.
