Department of Chemistry
Located in Willet Science Center, 3rd floor

Chemistry • Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Chemistry continues to be a hot career path as well as the foundation for other careers.

The Department of Chemistry is lead by a group of dedicated faculty members, all of whom hold doctorates. These faculty members are experts in analytical, bio-organic, environmental, inorganic, organic, physical and bio-chemistry aspects of the chemistry field. All chose to be at Mercer because they enjoy the opportunity of assisting students in their discovery of chemistry in the classroom and laboratory.

The Department's academic program initially emphasizes the functional aspects of chemistry and finishes with advanced courses and independent research. In addition, the program couples a sound foundation in theory and "hands-on" experience with modern chemical instrumentation.

The Department supports an active and award-winning American Chemical Society Student Affiliates chapter.  This Mercer student group hosts a series of on-campus activities during National Chemistry Week. The chapter also takes chemistry demonstrations to local elementary schools as an outreach project throughout the year.

The Bachelor of Science degree program consists of at least 38 semester hours of lecture, laboratory, and research that provides an excellent foundation in the field of chemistry. Students may also select a program that will result in Certification by the American Chemical Society in Chemistry, or Chemistry with an emphasis in Biochemistry.

Minors

The department offers a flexible minor in chemistry consisting of a year of general chemistry followed by seven hours of chemistry numbered above the 200 level.

Concentration in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

The Department of Chemistry contributes to the concentration in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. This program is designed to prepare students for advanced study in biology, for professional study in a health field, or for a career in science or science education.

American Chemical Society Degree Certification

The Mercer chemistry program is certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS), allowing the University to offer an ACS-certified degree in chemistry that serves as a national-level recognition for successfully completing a rigorous academic chemistry curriculum.

Problems in Chemistry
The program offers a two-semester laboratory capstone experience, featuring a set of experimental projects designed to integrate concepts and techniques from the major divisions of chemistry, presenting chemistry as a unified science.

Independent Research
Students with an interest in chemistry are encouraged to pursue independent research guided by a faculty member.

"Research and collaboration are not rare at Mercer; professors take a genuine interest in the students and want them to succeed in all aspects of science."
