Computers have become an essential tool in everyday life. From teaching programming to explaining computational problems, Mercer's Department of Computer Science prepares students to become the leaders in the field of technology.

The Computer Science Department offers three majors:
  • Computer Science (CSC),
  • Computational Science (CPS), and
  • Information Science and Technology (IST).
Any one of these majors prepares one to enter the technical job market or to continue studies at the graduate level. For those wanting to major in another discipline, a minor in the technical area of computer science or information science and technology is available.

Computer Science
The main focus of the computer science major is software design and development. Students learn several computer languages, such as Java and C++. These languages are then used by the student to design and program software systems to perform specific tasks. Individual and group programming assignments are found in the courses required for this major. Both a bachelor of science and a bachelor of arts are offered in computer science.

Computational Science
The bachelor of science in computational science is a rigorous major that requires students to take classes in mathematics, computer science, and in a specific scientific discipline. Throughout their coursework, students are continually challenged to apply their mathematical and programming skills to relevant problems in the physical, natural, social and behavioral sciences.

Information Science & Technology
The field of Information Science and Technology (IST) is a newly-emerging field of study at the undergraduate level. Students are introduced to state-of-the-art tools and technology for the purpose of applying computer technology (both hardware and software) to solve end-user problems. IST professionals help decide what technology is appropriate for a specific problem and then they are typically in charge of implementing this technology. Both a bachelor of science as well as a bachelor of arts is offered in IST.

Specialized Accreditation

The bachelor of science degree program in computer science is also accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of the Computer Sciences Accreditation Board.

Binary Bears
Students are selected to participate on the Binary Bears programming teams. Each fall, these teams compete in the Southeast Regional ACM Programming Competition. Mercer's 2006-2007 top team will go to Tokyo in 2007 to compete in the international competition. Read more.

Cyber Defense Team
Teams of students set up secure networks and then experts try to break into the students' networks. Students from numerous universities participate in the competition.

"I was very involved in the Computer Science department and one of my favorite extracurricular activities was the Binary Bears programming team.  After graduation, I attended Mercer's Walter F. George School of Law on a full scholarship.  Once there, I was surprised to find how important my Computer Science education was to my law school success.  The high-pressure, time-limited problem-solving nature of the programming team made my law school exams enjoyable instead of dreadful.  I graduated magna cum laude from the law school in May."
