Examine the interconnectedness of humans with the planet and the other species that share it.
The Earth and Environmental Science (EES) program is specifically designed to provide a broad interdisciplinary curriculum in which students and faculty explore the interaction of human societies and natural systems. The interconnectedness of humans with all other species, materials and their processes on earth is the underlying basis of this program. While the EES degree program develops a strong foundation of environmental study, it allows students to pursue and develop their own interests with degree programs suited to meet interests in the biological and physical sciences, or in the areas of environmental policy/planning. Other unique aspects of our major include the use of geospatial technologies (e.g., GIS and GPS) in the classroom, and our support of internships (e.g., at the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, Georgia Power Company, or Macon-Bibb County Water Authority) as integral components of academic study.
Bachelor of Science in Earth and Environmental Science
The B.S. curriculum is designed to develop a student's understanding of the methods and processes of applying the sciences of biology, chemistry, geology and physics to scientific problems of the environment. Students have the flexibility of emphasizing a particular field of environmental science (e.g., conservation biology, field sciences, environmental geology, environmental chemistry) when planning their course of study.
Bachelor of Arts in Earth and Environmental Studies
The B.A. curriculum is designed to develop a student's understanding of the methods and processes of applying the basic social sciences of sociology, political science and economics to policy-related problems of the environment. The degree emphasizes an understanding of the formulation, analysis and appropriate implementation of environmental policy from local through international levels.
Minor
Minor in Earth and Environmental Sciences
The EES minor is uniquely flexible in allowing students to shape their studies into a program that emphasizes either the policy or science tracts found within the major.
EES Seminar Series – The EES department sponsors a seminar series with one to two invited speakers presenting each semester on campus. Topics include multiple areas of environmental science and career choices forenvironmental scientists.
Students for Environmental Action – The department sponsors the Students for Environmental Action organization that coordinates activities and events to promote environmental literacy across campus. Activities also include off-campus community development projects, river cleanups, habitat restoration, promoting environmental education and awareness in local schools, and assisting in the development of an on-campus recycling program.
