Concentration

The 13-course Southern Studies concentration offers students the opportunity to gain a rigorous interdisciplinary perspective on the rich and varied culture and history of the American South.

The Benefits of this Concentration

·   Interdisciplinary approach - Engaging several disciplines leads to a broader understanding of the American South and also establishes a comprehensive base of knowledge for study in other areas.

·   Quality of Instruction - Specialists from each area lead courses ensuring that you have had personal attention from the best professors on campus.

·   Small class sizes - Most classes range from two to 10 students, meaning the instruction is highly tailored and participation is constant.

·   Preparation for the future - Rigorous requirements and high expectations prepare you for graduate study or even the professional world by teaching you how to produce thoughtful, high-quality research on deadlines.

·   Creativity - Southern Studies is based on the principle that a subject requires creative investigation, studying the culture of the American South from different perspectives with different tools and producing results in a diversity of formats.

“My experience in Southern Studies not only advanced my understanding of Southern culture, but it also taught me how to think critically and solve problems. Southern Studies engages a variety of disciplines to understand how people and culture works.  The process of using myriad sources and asking as many different questions of those sources as possible is applicable in almost any endeavor, from academia to business.

After graduating, I worked for a year at NewTown Macon, a public/private partnership working to revitalize downtown Macon.  I am currently living in York, England, pursuing a master’s degree in Conservation Studies (Historic Buildings) at the University of York on a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship.

Without my experiences in Southern Studies and the inspiration and encouragement of those professors, I would not have had these amazing opportunities.  I will always remain in debt to the program and Mercer.”
