Department of Physics
Located in Willet Science Center

Physics is the cornerstone of the sciences. The fundamentals of physics permit us to understand much of nature – not just the world surrounding us, but even the mysteries of the universe at large. In the past, physicists have given us radio and television, radar, fiber-optics, lasers, atomic energy and the semiconductor devices responsible for the information age. Discoveries that launched the telecommunications revolution, including the World Wide Web, were the work of physicists. And physics will continue to shape our society in dramatic fashion in the 21st Century.

Mercer is dedicated to excellence in physics education. The talents, availability and innovative spirit of the dedicated faculty, the small class sizes and the flexibility of the program ensure that the quality of education received by Mercer students compares favorably with that of the best physics departments in America.

Moving to New Building in 2007
The Department of Physics will soon relocate to the new $14-million Science and Engineering Building, currently under construction on the Macon campus. The two-story facility features new laboratories, specialized classrooms, a materials-testing system, study rooms and a 150-seat auditorium. The state-of-the-art teaching and research facility will further advance Mercer University's position as a leader in engineering and science education in the nation.

Bachelor of Science
The bachelor of science degree in physics consists of at least 39 credit hours of physics. In addition, Multivariable Calculus and Introduction to Differential Equations, and General Chemistry I/II are required. Successful completion of a senior comprehensive examination is also required.

Bachelor of Arts
The bachelor of arts degree in physics consists of at least 29 credit hours in physics. In addition, Multivariable Calculus and Introduction to Differential Equations, and at least eight credit hours of lab science courses outside of physics (i.e. BIO, CHM or EES) are required. Successful completion of a senior comprehensive examination is also required.

Minor

A minor in physics consists of at least 17 credit hours in physics.

Physics Seminar Program
The Physics Department sponsors a weekly seminar on faculty and student research projects. Physicists from all over the country, including Nobel laureates, have participated in the seminar program.
