Students Selected to Play at Carnegie Hall

MACON – Three Mercer University students were recently selected to play at Carnegie Hall as members of the 2003 National Wind Ensemble. Alison McDowell of Savannah, who plays the French horn, Rachel Hauser of Conyers, who plays the flute, and Katy Howd of Dacula, who also plays the flute, each sent an 8 to 10 minute audio tape, along with a recommendation from one of their Mercer music professors, Dr. Douglas Hill, and a résumé including all of their previous musical experience to audition for the prestigious ensemble. Truett Cathy Awarded Honorary Degree

MACON--President R. Kirby Godsey, on behalf of the Mercer University Board of Trustees, bestowed the Doctor of Humanities degree to Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy in a ceremony held Dec. 12 in the Religious Life Center on the Macon campus. Dr. Godsey said no other citizen has been more exemplary and more successful than Cathy, who has previously served on the Mercer University Board of Trustees. Macon, Ga. — In a collaboration that spans the continent, researchers have found that pluripotent stem cells isolated from adult muscle can be induced to become cells specific to nervous tissue, both nerve cells and the supporting tissue called neuroglia. Their findings, published in the Sept. 15 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience Research, open doors for patients with neurological disorders, who, in the future, may be able to use their own reserve pluripotent stem cells to grow new nerve cells and neuroglia. Researcher Gearing Up for Space Shuttle Landing
