Mercer University has announced a new endowed scholarship in memory of former local resident Edna Reed Boone (1915-2000).

The scholarship will benefit a student studying organ in the Department of Music.

Established with a gift from family members Charles and Sharon Boone Hamner, Randal and Diana Inman and Clifton and Jeanine Hamner, the Edna Reed Boone Memorial Scholarship recognizes Boone’s positive influence on the lives of many students. The scholarship specifically aims to benefit a woman from Wilkinson or Baldwin County seeking a quality musical education.

Boone lived in Milledgeville for more than 20 years and was a member of First Baptist Church. She was also a resident of Wilkinson County for many years and played the piano and pump organ at Liberty Baptist Church. In addition to her involvement with students and the church, Boone was active in the community and served the state as secretary to Lt. Governor Peter Zack Geer and secretary of the Georgia Senate.

Founded in 1833, Mercer University is one of the largest Baptist-affiliated institutions in the world and is the only independent university of its size in the nation to offer degree programs in liberal arts, business, engineering, education, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, law and theology. For 13 consecutive years, U.S. News and World Report has named Mercer University as one of the leading universities in the South.
