MACON — Mercer University student Cynthia Wilson, a piano performance major, recently received a $2,000 scholarship from the Atlanta Steinway Society. The Warner Robins junior studies piano under Dr. John Roberts at Mercer University. She is the daughter of Stephen and Patricia Wilson.

The Atlanta Steinway Society awarded six $2,000 scholarships this year to students studying piano at Georgia colleges and universities. In addition to its financial benefit, the scholarship also provides recipients with opportunities to perform.

Already, Wilson has participated in a recital for the Steinway Society in Atlanta, where she performed Prokofiev’s Sonata #4, 1st Movement to an audience mostly comprised of piano teachers from the Atlanta area.

At the University, Wilson is the official accompanist for the Mercer Chambers Singers and teaches piano in the Music Department’s pre-college program. Roberts considers Wilson "invaluable to the [pre-college] program." The feeling is mutual between the young teacher and her pupils. "I love working with young people, and it is fun to share my love of music with others," she said.

After completing her studies at Mercer, Wilson plans to study piano in graduate school. "After the rest of my schooling, I hope to continue teaching and to have as many opportunities for chamber music and solo performances as possible," she added.

Wilson is also active in the Mercer chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon, a professional music fraternity. Beyond piano, Wilson excels academically. She considers math her hobby, having taken several math classes for fun while at Mercer.
