Binary Bears Place in Top Five November 17, 2003 MACON- Mercer University's computer programming team, the Binary Bears, recently had four student teams place in the top five among Division II teams at the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Regional Programming Contest Championship.
The contest was held at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla. Students were asked to use their mathematics, data processing and computer knowledge to solve as many problems as they could in five hours using a single computer.

Student Presented Steinway Piano Scholarship November 6, 2003 MACON — Mercer University student Cynthia Wilson, a piano performance major, recently received a $2,000 scholarship from the Atlanta Steinway Society. Nursing Sees Changes in Entering Students
October 30, 2003 Atlanta—After more than 100 years in the nursing education business, the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing has witnessed an evolution in the type of students interested in nursing.

Mercer Student Bikes for Cause September 30, 2003 MACON- Mercer University engineering student Joshua Rubin recently completed the most physically demanding and emotionally rewarding experience of his life.
Over a two-month period, the Chapel Hill, N.C., native rode his bike 3,910 miles from San Francisco, Calif., to Washington, D.C., in a bike ride called "Journey of Hope."
The bike ride was organized by the nonprofit Push America- the exclusive philanthropy of Rubin's fraternity, Pi Kappa Phi. The mission of Push America is to promote a better understanding of people with disabilities.

Professor Awarded Grant to Continue NASA Project September 29, 2003 Macon, Ga.- Mercer University sophomore Amanda Chappell of Tullahoma, Tenn., and engineering assistant professor Renee Rogge, Ph.D., are reaching for the stars -- literally. The student-professor team is working on a project that will benefit astronauts.
With a $16,000 grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the team is creating a 3-D digital model of a human body. This will enable NASA researchers to better evaluate space suits and hardware used by astronauts.

Fast food companies are seeing lawsuits materialize against them, an increasing variety of diets are being tried, and the topic of eating disorders is continues to gain steam. It has been three years since University Commons initiated its Lilly Grant-funded Theological Exploration of Vocation. The idea behind this initiative is to help students recognize their life's calling in light of their faith, education and abilities.

New Students Benefit Central Georgia Economy August 26, 2003 MACON- Of the 750 new undergraduate students beginning classes at Mercer University in Macon this month, 80 percent are from outside of central Georgia.
Mercer's School of Law and School of Medicine share similar statistics. Of the 139 first-year law students, 83 percent are from outside of central Georgia. And 82 percent of the 60 first-year medical school students come from other parts of Georgia.
Twenty-six percent of the new students enrolled in fall classes are from out of state. This all means dollar signs for the local economy and brings diversity to the University campus, benefiting both the Mercer... [more]

Mercer Purchases Baptist Center from GBC August 25, 2003 ATLANTA - Mercer University has purchased the Baptist Center located at 2930 Flowers Road South, previously owned by the Georgia Baptist Convention and adjacent to the University's Atlanta campus.
Officials from the University and the Convention signed papers on Aug. 21, transferring the ownership of the 25 acres and five-story facility at a purchase price of $12 million.
As part of the agreement, the Convention will remain in the building for up to three years while the Convention's new facility is completed in Gwinnett County. The University will conduct a study on the best future usage of the facility.

Mercer Makes The Princeton Review's Best Colleges August 21, 2003 MACON, Ga.--Allen London, associate vice president and director of Undergraduate Admissions at Mercer University, has an excellent reason to be excited about the University's future enrollment levels.
Mercer has been named to The Princeton Review's top colleges in the country list. This prestigious list, which started with 300 schools, adds a few more institutions every three years. It now stands at 351 with the inclusion of Mercer and five other schools. With 3,500 four-year colleges in North America, that puts Mercer among the top 10 percent.

Pat Conroy to Speak at 14th Annual Authors Luncheon August 20, 2003 Best-selling author Pat Conroy will be the featured speaker at the 14th annual Mercer University Authors Luncheon, sponsored by Mercer University Press.
The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Swissotel in Buckhead, Atlanta.

White Coat Ceremonies Welcome Students into Health Professions August 20, 2003 Macon, GA—First-year students at Mercer University School of Medicine and Southern School of Pharmacy recently received their first lesson in professionalism and compassion at White Coat Ceremonies in Macon and Atlanta.
During separate ceremonies, 60 medical students and 136 pharmacy students were cloaked in white coats, symbolizing a commitment to the responsibility of health care professions.
The School of Medicine on Mercer's Macon campus welcomed its largest class this year. Students Arrive at Mercer to Begin College Careers August 15, 2003 WHAT: Boxes, trunks, lamps and even stuffed animals will line the sidewalks around Mercer's residence halls as new students arrive on campus for fall semester. Orientation Gets Students "Into the Streets" to Serve Community August 15, 2003 Who: Mercer University's new undergraduates
What: Freshman and transfer students will go "into the streets" to serve the Macon community as part of their orientation to college life at the University. Students will give an afternoon of service to a number of non-profit community organizations. Coordinated through Campus Life, in consultation with Volunteer Macon and Mercer's University Commons, "Into the Streets" is a student-run service activity that is part of the Mercer Orientation program.

Faculty Member Receives Grant for Cancer Research August 14, 2003 ATLANTA—The National Institutes of Health and National Cancer Institute recently awarded an RO1 grant to Southern School of Pharmacy faculty member Diane Matesic for cancer research.
In her study, Matesic will investigate how certain, new anti-tumor compounds are able to increase gap junction-mediated cell-cell communication between tumor cells and inhibit their tumorigenic characteristics.
Unlike normal cells, most tumor cells lack the ability to communicate cellular signals with each other and with surrounding cells through gap junction membrane channels. Regional Academic Center Opens in Henry County July 21, 2003 McDonough- Mercer University opened the doors to its newest regional academic center Aug. 13, providing opportunities for adult learners in Henry County and surrounding areas to advance their education close to home.
Following a ribbon cutting, the public was invited to tour the new facility at 160 Henry Parkway, adjacent to the Henry County Administration Building.
