ACS Student Affiliate Chapter Wins Outstanding Award Second Year in a Row December 22, 2004 Macon—Mercer University's student affiliate chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) received an Outstanding award for its chapter activities during the 2003-2004 academic year. This is the second year in a row that the Mercer University chapter has received this honor.

Churches Will Benefit from McAfee's Residencies November 24, 2004 ATLANTA – Lilly Endowment Inc. of Indianapolis, through its "Making Connections Initiative" program, has awarded a grant to the James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology of Mercer University. Chemistry Professor Wins Science Foundation Grant November 11, 2004 MACON - Mercer University professor Dr. Arthur Salido, assistant professor of chemistry in Mercer University's College of Liberal Arts, was recently awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation's "Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement" program. Totaling $102,000, the grant will purchase an Inductively-Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICPOES), a cutting-edge instrument used in determining metals in samples and investigating air and water contamination.

Law School Bar Passage Best in State for First Timers, Faculty Rocks November 10, 2004 The Walter F. George School of Law of Mercer University has received excellent returns based on graduates' success and faculty expertise.
Graduates of the Mercer Law School taking the most recent bar exam for the first time had a higher passage rate than any of the other law schools in Georgia. Education Students Gain Classroom Experience While Studying Abroad September 13, 2004 Macon- Observing various types of classroom environments is a requirement of teacher education students at most colleges and universities. Mercer University's Tift College of Education recently added a twist to this common practice. Six education students had the unique opportunity to observe classrooms in Scotland over the summer.

Standards Commission Approves New Educational Master's Program September 13, 2004 On Thursday, Sept. 9, the Georgia Professional Standards Commission voted to approve a Master of Education in Educational Leadership program at Mercer University with all standards being met. Created in response to the growing need for principals in Georgia, this new program will allow in-service teachers to earn a master's degree in administration close to home. Professor on Team to Discover Jamestown September 13, 2004 An Anglo-American team of archaeologists reports the discovery of the remains of Jamestown, an early colonial settlement on the Caribbean island of Nevis. Newly unearthed evidence may confirm the legend that Jamestown was destroyed when an earthquake and tidal wave struck the island in 1690.

Paul, Sam Nunn Eminent Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Mercer University, was recently named the recipient of the 2005 Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Electromagnetics Award.
The largest technical society in the world, IEEE gives only one such award worldwide each year. The award consists of a bronze medal, certificate and $10,000. Ceremony Marks Start of Journey in Pharmacy Studies August 16, 2004 WHO: The entering first-year class of Mercer University's Southern School of Pharmacy
WHAT: Will participate in the Southern School of Pharmacy's White Coat Ceremony. They will be "cloaked" in their first white coat that symbolizes their commitment to the pharmacy profession. Dr. Judy L. Gardner, a 1987 graduate of the School of Pharmacy and a newly appointment member of Georgia's Board of Pharmacy, will deliver the keynote address to the students, their family members and friends. Dr. Gardner is director of Pharmaceutical Services at Northside Hospital.

Students 'Into the Streets' For Community Service August 16, 2004 WHO: Mercer University's new undergraduate students.
WHAT: 725 new freshmen and transfer students will go "into the streets" to serve the Macon community as part of their orientation to college life at the University. Students will give an afternoon of service to a number of non-profit and community organizations.
WHEN: From 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 16
WHERE: In partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Mercer students will perform innovative literacy projects with third graders at King Elementary School, 1307 Shurling Dr. in Macon.
