Mercer to Unveil Master's in Public Safety Leadership December 4, 2006 ATLANTA — The College of Continuing and Professional Studies of Mercer University will launch its newest degree program in January. The Master of Science in Public Safety Leadership will be the first of its kind in Georgia to focus on a holistic approach to public safety education.
This degree will augment all public safety disciplines and is designed for individuals who work in federal agencies, law enforcement, probation, parole, corrections, and fire rescue and prevention, or in the areas of anti-terrorism and homeland security. Mercer Earns High Marks For Student Engagement December 4, 2006 MACON — Mercer University has scored significantly higher than its peers on a major survey of student engagement and learning. The National Survey of Student Engagement results for the University showed Mercer had achieved above its peers in all five benchmark areas of the study. Mercer also earned high marks for spiritual development, academic rigor and overall learning.
The national survey documented the University's outstanding performance in overall learning. The survey indicated that 92 percent of Mercer's respondents rated their entire educational experience as either good or excellent compared to only 87 percent of the respondents from peer institutions.

Trustees Elect New Members and Life Trustee December 1, 2006 MACON — The Board of Trustees of Mercer University elected nine new trustees to the Board on Friday, Dec. 1, during the board's semi-annual meeting at The University Center on Mercer's Macon campus. The Board named Tom Watson Brown as a Life Trustee, only the fifth in the University's history, and re-elected Augusta, Ga., attorney David E. Hudson as chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Computer Students Earn Trip to Japan for Finals November 30, 2006 MACON — Mercer University's Binary Bears computer programming team has earned a place in the 2007 ACM International Computer Programming Contest, the team learned today. The team was will be one of just 21 schools from North America to take part in the competition, which will be held in Tokyo, Japan in March.

Whittum Named Senior VP for Enrollment Management November 28, 2006 MACON, Ga. – Mercer University President William D. Underwood has appointed a 25-year enrollment management veteran to serve as the institution's senior vice president for enrollment management.
Terry E. Whittum, currently associate vice president and dean of admissions at Stetson University in Deland, Fla., will assume the post Jan. 2, 2007. International Economics Prof. Joins Business School November 28, 2006 ATLANTA — Penelope B. Prime, Ph.D., an expert in international economics as well as China and Asia, has joined the faculty of Mercer University's Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics. She holds the academic rank of professor and will teach on Mercer's Atlanta campus.
Dr. Prime is also director of the China Research Center, which she founded in 2001. The Center has associates from numerous institutions in Georgia, with its base of operations now at Mercer University. Prime was formerly a faculty member at Kennesaw State University.

Law School Team Advances to National Competition November 20, 2006 The Mercer University Walter G. George School of Law National Moot Court Team won the Region 5, National Moot Court Competition Nov. 18 at the Richard Russell Building, United States District Courthouse, in Atlanta. The Mercer Law School also captured the best brief award and Tiffany Williams, a Mercer law student, was named the best oralist in the final round. The team is composed of Barton Black, of Houston, Texas; Mary Weeks of Phenix City, Ala., and Williams, of Macon. Engineering Professor Named Among World's Best November 13, 2006 MACON — The world's largest electrical engineering society has awarded a professor in Mercer University School of Engineering its highest undergraduate teaching honor. IEEE, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, has named Clayton R. Paul as the winner of its 2007 Undergraduate Teaching Award "for sustained excellence and creativity in the preparation of instructional material and inspirational teaching of undergraduate engineering students."

Mercer Human Services Professor Earns Major Award November 13, 2006 MACON — The National Organization for Human Services has named Mercer Human Services Professor and Program Coordinator Kyra Osmus as its 2006 recipient of the Lenore McNeer Award. Mercer Helping NASA Build A Better Robot November 13, 2006 By Jennifer BurkTELEGRAPH STAFF WRITER
The project resembles something made with Tinkertoys - rods connected together by washers - but it's much more complex.
These rods and washers - called struts and nodes - are part of a robot being developed by NASA to explore the terrain of other planets. The struts can get longer or shorter, allowing the robot to explore places that current robots can't.
The job of two Mercer University students and a professor is to figure out how to control the robot.

Pharmacy Student Awarded National Scholarship November 7, 2006 ATLANTA – Bryan Rodgers, a fourth-year pharmacy student at Mercer University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, is one of 27 pharmacy students to be awarded a scholarship for the 2006-2007 academic year by the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) Foundation. The scholarships, totaling $45,000, were awarded at NCPA's 108th Annual Convention and Trade Exposition recently held in Las Vegas.
