Club Wrestling Program Invited to National Tournament
MACON — Mercer University’s club wrestling team is one of 16 schools invited to participate in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) National Dual Team Championship Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at Middle Tennessee State University. The invitation reflects the Bears’ growing program and the strength of the team’s performance. Mercer will compete against three of last year’s top-five teams, including defending three-time champion Grand Valley State.
Among Mercer’s returning wrestlers are Bryan Frederick, Nic Barker, Ben Mercier and Curtis Doemel, all of whom qualified for the team national championships. Top freshman wrestlers include Kyle Eastis and Brian Gurucharri. The coach is Kevin Andres.
The wrestling program at Mercer is a club sport and member of the NCWA and not among the sports included in intercollegiate athletics.
