MACON, Ga. – For the second time in as many weeks, former Bears’ outfielder John Dortch has collected a postseason graduate scholarship. The outfielder for Craig Gibson’s baseball squad continues to add academic accolades after becoming the second consecutive Mercer baseball player to earn the Atlantic Sun Conference’s male postseason graduate scholarship two weeks ago at the conference meetings. This time the scholarship was a national award with each of the regional selection committees sending their top 10-15 list to the national committee. Medical School Teams with MedShare to Send Medical Supplies and Equipment to Zimbabwe

Dr. Mike Smith, a medical professor, and the Mercer University community have come together to raise the funding for the sending of a 40-foot container of medical supplies and equipment with Atlanta-based non-profit MedShare International. The medical products will benefit the Sanyati Baptist Hospital in Sanyati, Zimbabwe, a government-owned hospital that has trouble meeting the demands of its patients because of very limited medical supplies.

PATATE, Ecuador — Mercer student Andrew Lockwood, of Ringgold, is spending his summer working with Baptist missionaries in Ecuador and is documenting his trip on his blog, andrewinecuador2008.blogspot.com. The trip, which began June 6 and will end Aug. 2, marks Lockwood’s fourth time in Ecuador. The junior industrial engineering student is keeping the blog this year to document his trip.

MACON, Ga. – The third annual Atlantic Sun Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) fundraising competition again shattered records as the combined efforts resulted in $21,966 raised for charities ranging from the American Cancer Society to local youth programs and local hospitals.

Student Group Co-Sponsoring Take Back the Night March and Vigil to End Sexual Violence

MACON – The Women’s and Gender Studies program and Mercer’s Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance are inviting community members to take part in an empowerment march to end sexual violence. The event is part of “Take Back the Night” and will begin at 7 p.m., when participants will gather at Third Street Park, march down Cherry and Magnolia Streets, and end with a candlelight vigil in Washington Park in downtown Macon. During the vigil, survivors, supporters and advocates are encouraged to help break the silence about sexual violence and speak out about their own experiences with sexual violence.

Bell Family Gifts Historic Home to Mercer School of Engineering

One of Macon’s most historic homes, once used by the Allman Brothers Band for their debut album photo cover, is now owned by Mercer University, thanks to the generosity of a Savannah family with close ties to Mercer. The Bell House, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was gifted to the University to benefit its School of Engineering by Mercer Trustee Gus Bell, of Savannah, and his family in memory of his wife, Amanda Hancock Morris Bell.

College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences to Sponsor Latin Health Fair

Mercer University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences will conduct a Latin Health Fair on Saturday, April 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fair will be held at Norcross First United Methodist Church, 2500 Beaver Ruin Road.
The fair will offer free diabetes and blood pressure screenings, and will also provide information about pediatric immunization schedules, cancer awareness, heartburn awareness and women’s health issues. Pharmacists will be on hand to provide information and answer questions.
Translators will be available for Spanish-speaking patients.

Mercer's Gushee to Appear Sunday Morning On CNN Talk Show

David Gushee, Distinguished University Professor of Christian Ethics at the McAfee School of Theology, will appear this Sunday morning at 11 a.m. on Wolf Blitzer's Late Edition talk show on CNN. Gushee will discuss the Compassion Forum event that will occur later on Sunday at Messiah College. Mercer Students, Faculty, Staff to Help Historic Macon with Neighborhood Cleanup

MACON — Mercer University students, faculty and staff will join the Historic Macon Foundation and Beall’s Hill residents in a Neighborhood Cleanup on Thursday at 3 p.m. The event will be followed by a cookout at 5 p.m. for participants.
The Cleanup will begin at the pocket park between Ross Street and Ross Street Lane and conclude at the pocket park, where the cookout will be held. The food and drinks are free.
