University Set for New School Year

Mercer is gearing up for another exciting year, with classes beginning the week of Aug. 24 and more than 600 freshmen expected on the Macon campus for the annual move-in day and associated celebrations on Aug. 22. [more]

University to Hold Commencement for First Education Ph.D. Graduates

ATLANTA — The first Ph.D. graduates from Mercer University’s Tift College of Education will take part in a special commencement honoring their achievement on Saturday, Aug. 15, at Mercer’s Atlanta campus. The event begins at 11 a.m. in the Sheffield Student Center. The 31 graduates hail from around the state and will receive their Ph.D. degrees in educational leadership, a program launched in 2006 on Mercer’s Macon and Atlanta campuses. [more]

New Ph.D. Programs Begin In Atlanta and Macon

This month, two new Ph.D. programs at Mercer will welcome their first students. The Tift College of Education welcomes students to its second Ph.D. program, this one in curriculum and instruction, on the Macon and Atlanta campuses, while the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing welcomes its first doctoral students in Atlanta. College Basketball Icon Dick Vitale to Visit Mercer Oct. 12

College basketball analyst Dick Vitale, considered by many to be college basketball’s biggest ambassador, will speak to Mercer University audiences this fall. “Dickie V,” who joined ESPN during the 1979-80 season – just after the network’s launch – will speak twice on Monday, Oct. 12, at lunchtime in Atlanta at The Westin Atlanta Perimeter North, and that evening in Macon at the University Center. His visit to Mercer is being presented by the Mercer Athletic Foundation and The Executive Forum. [more]

Law Student Wins National Labor Law Writing Competition

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Mercer Law School student Erica L. Hickey has been named winner of The College of Labor and Employment Lawyers’ Second Annual Writing Competition for Law Students. Hickey, whose paper was titled “Gomez-Perez V. Potter - Yet Another Step Away From Textualist Interpretation Of Employment Discrimination Statutes,” received a $1,500 first-place prize. [more]

Georgia Research Alliance Awards Grant to Pharmacy Professor

ATLANTA — The Georgia Research Alliance has funded a new collaborative research project, led by Mercer University professor Dr. Martin D’Souza, to explore using nanotechnology to deliver a pneumonia vaccine.  Dr. D’Souza, professor in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, will collaborate on the $100,000 grant with researchers from Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. White Coat Ceremonies Set for Macon, Savannah and Atlanta

The Class of 2013 for the Mercer School of Medicine and the Doctor of Pharmacy students at the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences will be officially introduced to their Mercer education at white coat ceremonies that begin this weekend. School of Medicine students will receive their coats at ceremonies in Macon on Aug. 15 and in Savannah on Aug. 16, while pharmacy students will participate in their ceremony on Aug. 20 in Atlanta. The students will also take their professional oaths for the first time at the ceremonies. [more]

New Major in Human Resources Launching this Month

The College of Continuing and Professional Studies launches a new undergraduate major in human resources administration and development this month at the Henry County and Douglas County Regional Academic Centers. The program will be offered in a flexible evening and weekend format that also includes hybrid online and face-to-face courses. [more]

Henry Center to Host Public Safety Impact Day

McDONOUGH — Mercer will hold the inaugural Public Safety Impact Day in Henry County on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This free community event will be held at Mercer’s Henry County Regional Academic Center, located at 160 Henry Parkway in McDonough. The event is sponsored by the College of Continuing and Professional Studies as part of the roll-out of its newly reformulated undergraduate major in public safety in Henry County. [more]

Criminal Justice Major Reformulated into Public Safety

This month, the College of Continuing and Professional Studies will welcome the first students into its reformulated undergraduate major in public safety. The program expands upon the College’s successful major in criminal justice in order to better serve current and future public safety officials. The new public safety program launches at four of the College’s locations: Atlanta, Macon, Henry County and Douglas County. [more]

Down Payment Assistance Program Adds New Incentives

The highly successful Mercer University-Knight Foundation Down Payment Assistance Program has a new round of funding, as well as several new incentives to make buying a home in the Intown Macon historic district even more affordable. McDuffie Labor Day Festival Returns to Mercer

Sixteen exceptionally talented high school strings musicians from 10 states have been selected to participate in the Fifth Annual Robert McDuffie and Friends Labor Day Festival for Strings. Held Sept. 3-7 at the Townsend School of Music the intense five-day festival and musical-learning extravaganza will provide the students an opportunity to study at Mercer with world-renowned violinist and Distinguished University Professor of Music Robert McDuffie, as well as the distinguished artists of the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings at Mercer.
