Mercerians Out in Force to Celebrate Homecoming


MACON — It was a weekend of reconnecting, reuniting and rediscovering for hundreds of Mercer alumni, as they made their way back to Macon to celebrate with old friends and rekindle their love of Mercer. Trustees Approve Two Ph.D. Programs

MACON — Mercer trustees at their annual meeting Dec. 4 approved new Ph.D. programs in nursing and curriculum and instruction, welcomed 10 new board members, elected officers for 2009, and recognized an outgoing board member as a Life Trustee. The new doctoral programs – Mercer’s third and fourth – fulfill objectives in the University’s recently-adopted 10-year strategic plan to expand Ph.D. offerings. [more]

Mercer Students More Engaged than Students at Peer Institutions

MACON — Recently released National Survey of Student Engagement results show that Mercer University students have a more engaged educational experience than students at its peer institutions and at Georgia’s public universities. [more]

Law School Graduates Pass State Bar Exam in Record Margin

More than 95 percent of Mercer University School of Law graduates who took the Georgia Bar Examination for the first time in July passed, according to the annual report released Nov. 3 by the Georgia Office of Bar Admissions. The first-time pass rate of 95.8 percent for Mercer Law School graduates is the highest first-time pass rate at the law school this decade. [more]

United Way Campaign Concludes With Another Record

It was another record-breaking year for the 2008 United Way of Central Georgia campaign. Macon campus and MERC employees pledged or gave $56,405 for the campaign, surpassing last year’s record of $46,498 and smashing the 2008 campaign goal of $47,000. The number of employees who contributed to the campaign, which concluded in November, increased to another record, with 286 contributors, including 100 new contributors. [more]

Mercer Wins Walk Georgia Cup

The Mercer teams participating in the Bibb County Cooperative Extension Service’s 2008 Walk Georgia campaign took home the “Georgia Cup” for the organization that walked the most miles during the fitness competition. In Bibb County, Mercer’s teams logged more than 5,000 miles between September and November beating out other Bibb County organizations for the title of most active institution. [more]

TBS to Film Comedy Show Pilot at The Grand Opera House

TBS has selected Macon and The Grand Opera House, a performing arts center of Mercer University, as the first location for a live taping of a new comedy show to air on the Turner Broadcasting System’s cable television network. “The TBS Comedy Road Show,”hosted by comedian/actor and all-around funny guy Harland Williams, will be taped at The Grand on Monday, Dec. 22, and will air at a later date. This month, The Grand Opera House, a performing arts center of Mercer University, invites patrons to temporarily “escape” from the daily hustle and bustle with a lineup of festive holiday events that will get even the biggest Scrooge into the spirit of the season. [more]

Jittery Joe’s Coffee Opens at Mercer Village


MACON — There is now a new place on the College Hill Corridor to beat the chill.  Jittery Joe’s Coffee, an Athens-based roaster and coffeehouse, opened up its first Macon location in a newly restored historic building owned by Mercer University. The coffee shop joined another college-friendly business, Ingleside Pizza, in the redeveloped retail district adjacent to the Mercer campus. [more]
