Climatologist to Speak on Links Between Climate Change and Hurricanes

Kerry Emanuel, Ph.D., a climatologist and hurricane expert, will give the Second Annual Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecture at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25, on the Macon campus. Emanuel will give a lecture entitled “Divine Wind: The History and Science of Hurricanes.”

The event will be held in the Auditorium of the new Science and Engineering Building. The lecture is free and open to the public and will be preceded by a reception at 6 p.m.

Hurricanes have inspired literature and art through the ages and changed the course of history. In his lecture, Emanuel, a professor of atmospheric science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will discuss the science of hurricanes and their role in human history, ending with a discussion of the effect of climate change on hurricane activity.

“Spotlight on China Series”

The College of Liberal Arts kicked off its “Spotlight on China Series” on Oct. 11, with a lecture by China expert and Mercer Economics Professor Penelope Prime, Ph.D., entitled “China’s Economic Rise: Context and Implications.”

School of Music Dedication Highlights The President’s Club Events

Mercer will hold the dedication of the Townsend School of Music during a special series of events on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26 and 27, in Macon. The annual dinner and luncheon meeting of The President’s Club, one of the University’s top donor recognition clubs, are part of the two days of celebration. The events will mark the formal dedication of the Townsend School of Music, which was established with a significant gift from Mercer Trustee Carolyn Townsend McAfee and her son, J. Thomas McAfee III, and his wife, Julie Crangle McAfee, to endow the school in 2006. The school is named in honor of Raymond Clay Townsend and Sophia Malin Townsend, the parents of Carolyn Townsend McAfee. [more]

School of Medicine to Hold 25th Anniversary Celebration on Nov. 3 at Idle Hour

Alumni and friends of the Mercer University School of Medicine will celebrate its 25th Anniversary on Nov. 3. The festivities will conclude with a black-tie-optional dinner and program for all alumni and friends at 7 p.m. at Idle Hour Country Club in Macon. At the dinner, the School will recognize many of the people who were responsible for the creation and establishment of the Medical School. [more]

Princeton Review Gives High Marks to Law, Business

The Princeton Review’s latest education guides place the Walter F. George School of Law and the Eugene W. Stetson School of Business among the nation’s leading schools. The New York-based education service company features Mercer in the just-published 2008 edition of its “Best 170 Law Schools” and in the 2008 edition of “Best 290 Business Schools.” [more]

LAST MINUTE NEWS: PRISM Magazine Ranks Engineering School No. 3 in Percent of Female Graduates

The October edition of PRISM, the American Society for Engineering Education's magazine, ranked the School of Engineering No. 3 in the United States for awarding the highest percentage of engineering bachelor's degrees to women. Mercer's ranking was based on the number of women who graduated with an engineering degree during the 2005-2006 academic year. Of that class year, 36.6 percent of the School's graduates were women. The data is compiled by the American Society for Engineering Education from a pool of 261 schools that awarded 50 or more bachelor of science degrees. Matalin and Carville Headline Next Executive Forum Nov. 7

James Carville and Mary Matalin, Washington’s best-loved political couple, will be the featured speakers at Mercer University's Executive Forum Presented by BB&T on Wednesday, Nov. 7. The couple will give a lunch presentation at The InterContinental Buckhead in Atlanta and a dinner presentation at 6:30 p.m. at The University Center on Mercer's Macon campus. [more]

Preaching Consultation An Overwhelming Success

The Rev. Barbara Brown Taylor was the keynote speaker for a sold-out Preaching Consultation in September.

The 2007 Mercer Preaching Consultation, held Sept. 23-25 at the King & Prince Beach and Golf Resort, St. Simons Island, had a record attendance of 230 participants, including many from outside Georgia. The Rev. Barbara Brown Taylor, who was named one of the most effective preachers in the English language by Newsweek magazine, was the keynote speaker, along with nine other outstanding speakers. Tift College of Education Celebrates Articulation Agreement

Tift College of Education celebrated its articulation agreement with the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education at a ceremony on Oct. 17 in the Atlanta Administration and Conference Center. The College signed the articulation agreement with the Department last year, making it easier for teachers and potential educators to progress from entry-level certificate and associate programs and continue on to bachelor’s degree programs at the College.
