The College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences is expanding its footprint around the Atlanta campus. The College’s Center for Clinical Research, where human studies are conducted, has relocated across the street to a larger space previously occupied by administrative offices of the YMCA.
“Expanding the capacity of the Center will also increase our capacity for students to gain interactive experience with patients and participate in the clinical research process,” said Dr. Chad VanDenBerg, clinical associate professor and director of the Center.
The Center performs clinical trials under contracts with drug companies, the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and the Mercer School of Medicine. College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences faculty oversee the studies and supervise Doctor of Pharmacy candidates as they work on their patient service requirements.
“We’ve more than tripled in size, so this move improves our initial clinical phase capacity significantly, as well as our capacity for the out-patient phase,” Dr. VanDenBerg said. “As a stand-alone building with easier access from the street, it will also be more convenient for patient visits.”
The Center, at 3015 Flowers Road S., is more than 3,000 square feet and includes an 18-bed dormitory and two lounges for patients who must stay overnight. The renovated spaces will also include administrative offices and a processing facility. The move from the DuVall Building also gives the College room to expand into the Center’s former space.
