STOP to Hold National Anti-Human Trafficking Conference in Macon

Mercer will host a national conference on human trafficking, titled “STOP Sex trafficking: A Call to End 21st Century Slavery,” on March 19-20 in Willingham Auditorium on Mercer’s Macon campus. The conference is organized by Mercer students in STOP, the Sex Trafficking Opposition Project, to counter the growing worldwide crisis. According to the U.S. State Department, there are more than a million women and children trafficked into sex slavery each year. Nearly 20,000 are trafficked annually into the United States and many of these victims are trafficked into the Southeast. [more]

Dr. Wade Shaw Appointed Dean of School of Engineering

On Jan. 30, President William D. Underwood announced the appointment of Dr. Wade Shaw, professor of engineering systems at Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Fla., and editor-in-chief of IEEE Engineering Management Review , as dean of Mercer’s School of Engineering, effective July 1. Counseling Program Earns National Accreditation

The College of Continuing and Professional Studies has earned the prestigious national accreditation from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) for its Master of Science in Counseling program. The accreditation came at the end of an intensive three-year review process for the Atlanta-based program. [more]

McAfee Revises Doctor of Ministry Degree

The McAfee School of Theology has revised its Doctor of Ministry degree to make it more flexible for working students, potentially shortening the time it takes to complete the degree by as much as a year. By implementing ministry coaching over the summers and by revising a series of on-campus seminars, McAfee streamlined the timeline for earning the degree from four years to as little as three. Law School Fund-Raiser Shines Light on Public-Service Law

The Walter F. George School of Law, in conjunction with the Mercer Law and Public Service Program, is hosting its annual fund-raising event to support Mercer law students seeking unpaid summer internships in critical areas of public service. The Second Annual Celebration of ETHOS, an acronym that stands for “Extending The Hands Of Service,” is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 19, in The Armory Ballroom in Macon from 6:30 – 11 p.m. [more]

Mercerian, ‘Remember the Titans’ Coach, to Speak at Founders’ Day

Coach William “Bill” Yoast, 1949 graduate of Mercer University who was chronicled in the movie, “Remember the Titans,” will be the keynote speaker at Founders’ Day on the Macon campus Wednesday, Feb. 11. The program will begin at 10 a.m. in the Willingham Auditorium on the Macon Campus. [more]

Christianity Scholar Borg to Deliver Smith Lectures

Prominent author and Christian scholar Dr. Marcus J. Borg has been named the 2009 Harry Vaughan Smith Distinguished Visiting Professor of Christianity at Mercer. Dr. Borg will give three lectures on the Macon campus as part of his appointment.   Dr. Borg will speak in Newton Chapel, with each lecture building upon the theme “Rethinking the Big Questions: God, Jesus and the Christian Life.” [more]

Southern Food Expert and Author to Speak on Feb. 25

One of America’s most prominent food writers and an expert on Southern cuisine, John T. Edge, will speak on the Macon campus on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in Newton Chapel.  His lecture, “Cornpone and Buttermilk: Rethinking Southern Culinary Icons,” is free and open to the public. [more]

Poole to Present William L. Self Preaching Lectures at McAfee

The Rev. Chuck Poole, senior pastor of Northminster Baptist Church in Jackson, Miss., will deliver the 2009 William L. Self Preaching Lectures in Atlanta, Feb. 16-17, for  the McAfee School of Theology. Poole’s topic will be “Try to Say It Softly – Prophetic Preaching in a Pastoral Voice.”The event will be held in Cecil B. Day Hall. [more]

Mercer Habitat Chapter to Hold Luncheon for 2009 Build

Caring for Creation Conference to Explore Ethics of Climate Change

In partnership with Harvard Medical School’s Center for Health and the Global Environment, Mercer’s Atlanta campus will host a multidiscplinary conference, titled “Caring for Creation: Ethical Responses to Climate Change,” Feb. 27-28, in the Atlanta Administration and Conference Center. The conference is being organized by the Atlanta Campus’ Quality Enhancement Plan Team for Mercer faculty, students and staff on the Atlanta campus. [more]

Pharmacy’s Center for Clinical Research Relocates

The College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences is expanding its footprint around the Atlanta campus. The College’s Center for Clinical Research, where human studies are conducted, has relocated across the street to a larger space previously occupied by administrative offices of the YMCA. [more]

McDuffie Announces Expansion of Center Program, Will Perform Feb. 18

The Robert McDuffie Center for Strings, a special institute within the Townsend School of Music, will expand its program in the 2009-2010 academic year and is now accepting bass student applications for the fall. The Center has openings for two bass students, and auditions to fill the spaces will be held Feb. 21. [more]

Writer-in-Residence Jarman to Offer Several Public Events

Award-winning poet Mark Jarman, Mercer's 2009 Ferrol A. Sams Jr. Distinguished Writer in Residence, will give a poetry reading, a lecture and sponsor a reading while in residence at the Macon campus. [more]

Regional Africanist Conference On Feb. 6

Mercer’s Africana Studies Program will host the 10th annual meeting of the Southeast Africanist Network on Feb. 6 on the Macon campus. The Africana Studies Program is partnering with the University of Florida’s Center for African Studies to sponsor the regional conference, which is the preeminent event in the Southeast for scholars specializing in the study of Africa and the African Diaspora.
