Mercer, which is celebrating its 175th year, will mark the event with several special Founders’ Day activities, including the traditional convocation on the Macon campus, as well as a Feb. 26 event on the Atlanta campus and an event featuring a discussion with five “Mercer Legends” on the Macon campus. Aldridge To Retire As Dean of Engineering School

M. Dayne Aldridge, Sc.D., P.E., announced today that he will retire as dean of the Mercer University School of Engineering, effective June 30, 2008, completing a distinguished 9-year career as dean of the School and more than 45 years in engineering. [more]

ATLANTA — Fifteen thousand participants in the New Baptist Covenant convocation arrived in Atlanta Jan. 30 seeking unity in Christ and departed Feb. 1 wondering where their quest will lead.
In the meantime, they demonstrated racial, theological and geographic harmony as they prayed, sang, listened to sermons and attended workshops focusing on ministry to the people Jesus called “the least of these” in society. [more]

Prominent Evangelical Scholar to Deliver Smith Lectures At Mercer University

Prominent evangelical scholar the Rev. Dr. Anthony Campolo, professor emeritus at Eastern University, and founder and president of the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education, has been named the 2008 Harry Vaughan Smith Distinguished Visiting Professor of Christianity. Jewish New Testament scholar Amy-Jill Levine, Ph.D., of Vanderbilt University will be 2008 presenter of the William L. Self Preaching Lectures, Feb. 18-19, at McAfee School of Theology on Mercer’s Atlanta campus. Levine will give three lectures on “Jesus, Judaism and Anti-Jewish Preaching” over the two days: “Christians Say the Darndest Things: Mistakes about Judaism Mean Mistakes about Jesus,” “Telling Different Stories: How the Bible both Unites and Divides Jews and Christians,” and “Getting Past Guilt and Politeness: The Bible and Jewish-Christian Relations.” [more]

Match Money Doubled to Participate in Down Payment Assistance Program

Mercer, in partnership with the Knight Foundation, has expanded its grants to faculty and staff who purchase homes in the newly designated Intown Macon district, which includes the neighborhoods of Tatnall Square Heights, Huguenin Heights and Beall’s Hill, the neighborhoods around the Macon campus.
Since 1996, Mercer has provided down-payment assistance to full-time faculty and staff to purchase homes in the three neighborhoods. The program is a benefit to encourage Mercerians to participate in the revitalization of the neighborhoods. “Celebrating Grace” Hymnal Leaders Hold HymnPosiums

Almost two years ago, the Townsend-McAfee Institute of Church Music and Mercer University Press announced plans to produce a new hymnal. One of the first tasks for the editors – Tom McAfee, John Simons, Stanley Roberts, and Milburn Price – was to select a committee of 50 church musicians and theologians, composer and arrangers, laypeople and educators to comprise five committees to accomplish the task. In the intervening months, “Celebrating Grace: A Hymnal for Baptist Worship” became the hymnal’s title; an additional editor – David Music – was named; the Web site – www.celebrating-grace.com – was launched; and Mark Edwards, veteran minister of music at First Baptist Church, Nashville, Tenn., was tapped to become the first full-time employee of the project and “face” of the project. The 1948 graduating class of the Walter F. George School of Law will be honored during 2008 Law Day and Alumni Weekend activities March 7-8. United States Rep. Davis Making an Impact on Technical Communication Profession

Marjorie Davis, Ph.D., professor of Technical Communication and founding chair of the TCO Department in the School of Engineering, recently scaled back her role in the department, stepping aside as chair. However, the change has not meant a slow down. The recent recipient of a prestigious award recognizing her accomplishments, she has continued her work to refine the Technical Communication field and has been working on the Academic-Industry Leaders Summit for the Society of Technical Communication (STC), which is working to align the academic and professional portions of the field.
