McAfee School of Theology Awarded $1 Million for New Center

The Lilly Endowment Inc. has awarded a five-year, $1 million grant to the James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology to establish the McAfee Center for Teaching Churches, building on a previous grant that funded a pilot Transition-into-Ministry project. [more]

Mercer Commons’ Symposium to Focus on Character

The Sixth Annual Building the Beloved Community Symposium, sponsored by Mercer Commons, will be held Feb. 2 and 3 in Macon. This year’s event is built on the theme, “The Content of Their Character.” The Rev. Dr. Samuel Wells, dean of the chapel at Duke University and research professor of Christian ethics at Duke Divinity School, will deliver two addresses at the two-day event. [more]

Post-Colonial Theologian to Deliver Smith Lectures at Mercer

Dr. Kwok Pui Lan, a pioneer in Asian feminist theology and postcolonial theology, has been named Mercer’s 2010 Harry Vaughan Smith Distinguished Visiting Professor of Christianity. Dr. Kwok will give three lectures in February as part of her appointment. Each lecture is free and open to the public. [more]

Trustees Authorize New Graduate Programs

At its December 2009 meeting, the Mercer Board of Trustees approved several new graduate programs, including the first Ph.D. for the College of Continuing and Professional Studies. [more]

Mercer to Offer Courses in Two New Locations

The Board of Trustees at its December 2009 meeting approved two new locations to better serve students in metro Atlanta. Beginning this year, the University will offer courses in the Forsyth-North Fulton area, and in Newnan. [more]

Mercer Student to Receive Service-Learning Award at Gulf-South Summit

Mercer senior Hannah Vann will be awarded the Gulf-South Summit Award for Outstanding Student Contributions to Service-Learning in March at the Gulf-South Summit on Service-Learning and Civic Engagement through Higher Education in Athens. The Summit is the service-learning professional organization for the southeast region and includes schools such as Tulane University, Emory University and Mercer. [more]

Adult Students Create Literary Journal that May be First in the U.S.

Students from Mercer’s College of Continuing and Professional Studies have published a literary journal, titled Regeneration!: A Journal of Creative Writing, that may be the first of its kind in the country. The journal is written and edited by non-traditional undergraduate students, and is a first, the group says. [more]

‘The 30-Minute Seminary’ Introduces Cable Audience to Theological Education

In an effort to pull back the veil on theological education, McAfee School of Theology this month debuts “The 30-Minute Seminary,” a series of 14 programs to be broadcast to more than one million homes in the metro-Atlanta area on Atlanta Interfaith Broadcasting, beginning Jan. 28. [more]

Provost Delivers Paper in Russia on Major Russian Intellectual

Mercer Provost Dr. Wallace Daniel traveled to Russia last week to deliver an invited presentation at the Library of Foreign Literature in conjunction with the kick-off event for a yearlong celebration of one of Russia’s most highly regarded public intellectuals, Aleksandr Men’.  Dr. Daniel, a Russia historian and expert on civil society in Russia, has studied the country throughout his academic career and delivered a paper, titled “Aleksandr Men’ and the Conflict Between Freedom and Power,” on Jan. 21 in the Great Hall of the library, where Men’ gave many of his public lectures. Mixed-Use Development Coming to Mercer Village

Mercer has partnered with two private development companies to build a $10 million mixed-use development on the Macon campus that will feature loft-style apartments and retail space for the Mercer Bookstore and other businesses that cater to the Mercer community and residents in the College Hill Corridor. College Hill’s Mercer Village to Welcome The Bike Store

The Bike Store is moving its Macon location to Mercer Village. The bike retail and repair business has signed a lease for 1305 Linden Ave., a 3,200-square-foot space next door to the Georgia Public Broadcasting studio. Renovation of the space is under way, and the owners expect to complete the move by March 1. [more]

Pope to Lead Mercer Athletic Foundation, Cole Appointed Director of Athletics

On Jan 6, President William D. Underwood announced the appointment of Bobby Pope, current director of athletics, as special assistant to the president and the first full-time executive director of the Mercer Athletic Foundation, and named State Representative and Mercer alumnus Jim Cole as director of athletics. The appointments are effective July 1. [more]

James Florence Becomes Mercer’s All-Time Leading Scorer


In the second half of Mercer’s game at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte on Dec. 29, senior point guard James Florence drained a 3-point shot from the corner to become Mercer’s all-time leading scorer. In the game against the 49ers, Florence not only passed the legendary Sam Mitchell’s career total of 1,986 points, but also became the first Mercer player ever to score 2,000 points in a career. Faculty and Staff Invited to Volunteer for Atlantic Sun Championships in March

Faculty and staff have an opportunity to help the University put on the Atlantic Sun Conference basketball championships in March. For the first time in school history, Mercer will host the A-Sun Men’s and Women’s Conference Championships. The University will need volunteers to help with this exciting event, which runs March 3-6. The championships will feature the 16 top men’s and women’s basketball teams competing for the right to not only claim the conference championships but also advance to the NCAA Tournament. Also, the games will be television regionally, with the men’s championship game being carried nationally on the ESPN network. [more]
