Carnegie Picks Mercer for Highly Selective National Designation

Mercer earned national recognition from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching for its commitment to community engagement, the foundation announced Dec. 18. Mercer is the only college in Georgia, and one of just 119 in the United States, to be selected by the foundation for its 2008 Community Engagement Classification. Mercer joins 76 other institutions identified in the 2006 selection process, including Emory University and Spelman College, the only other Georgia institutions to achieve the classification to date. Double Graduate Makes History in State of Georgia

ATLANTA — In the chambers of the Georgia House of Representatives on Jan. 6 – amid a sea of state dignitaries, family, friends and media – Mercer University undergraduate and law school alumna, M. Yvette Miller, was sworn in as the state’s first African-American woman chief judge of the Georgia Court of Appeals. As chief judge of one of the busiest appellate courts in the United States, Judge Miller will be responsible for the administration on the court and will act as the head of the court for ceremonial purposes and for all communications. She will serve a two-year term. [more]

Danheiser Named Dean of College of Continuing and Professional Studies

Mercer President William D. Underwood announced the appointment of Dr. Priscilla Danheiser as dean of the College of Continuing and Professional Studies, effective Dec. 15. The appointment of Dr. Danheiser, who holds the faculty rank of professor of psychology and has served as interim dean of the College since July 1, follows an eight-month-long national search. Atlanta Campus to Hold Conference on Climate Change

Mercer’s Atlanta campus will host a groundbreaking conference, titled “Caring for Creation: Ethical Responses to Climate Change,” Feb. 27-28 in the Atlanta Administration and Conference Center. The event is part of a campus-wide ethics initiative sponsored by the Atlanta Campus’ Quality Enhancement Plan committee, for Mercer faculty, students and staff on the Atlanta campus. [more]

Political Economy Series Line-Up Finalized

Prominent economists – including a Nobel Prize winner – will be featured throughout the spring as part of the Stetson School of Business and Economics lecture series titled “Readings in Political Economy.” To be held on the Macon campus, the series kicks off on Jan. 27, when Auburn University’s Dr. Robert Lawson will deliver a lecture on economic freedom at 6 p.m. in the Medical School Auditorium. The lecture series will also include a presentation by the 2002 Nobel Prize winner in economics, Dr. Vernon Smith, on March 16. [more]

Jarman Named 2009 Sams Distinguished Writer in Residence

Mercer has selected poet Mark Jarman as the Ferrol A. Sams Jr. Distinguished Writer in Residence for 2009. As part of the appointment, he will teach a writing course and give several public readings and lectures in February. [more]

University Will Host Regional Africanist Conference in February

Mercer’s Africana Studies Program will host the 10th annual meeting of the Southeast Africanist Network on Feb. 6 on the Macon campus. The Africana Studies Program is partnering with the University of Florida’s Center for African Studies to sponsor the regional conference, which is the preeminent event in the Southeast for scholars specializing in the study of Africa and the African Diaspora. Beloved Community Symposium to Focus on Next Steps

The Fifth Annual Building the Beloved Community Symposium will be held Feb. 17-18 in Macon. This year’s event is built on the theme, “Next Steps Toward the Beloved Community,” and will include presentations by two noted pastors. [more]
