Macon Campus to Host Caring for Creation Conference in Fall

Following the success of the Atlanta Campus’ Caring for Creation conference in the spring, the Macon campus will hold a similar conference addressing the ethical and religious elements of climate change. The conference, titled “Caring For Creation: A Scientific and Theological Response,” will be held Oct. 29-31. The final program is in development, and organizers are urging Macon campus faculty to consider making the conference a part of the semester’s syllabi.

The conference will feature invited lectures and panel discussions Thursday and Friday, Oct. 29 and 30. On Saturday, Oct. 31, the conference will hold a "green” day of service on a variety of projects, such as tree planting along the Ocmulgee Riverwalk, community gardens in some of the nearby neighborhoods and weatherization of low-income homes.

Among the goals and objectives of the conference are: galvanizing Mercer students to take responsibility for changes in their own lives to care for the environment, creation and humanity; increasing Mercer's commitment to sustainable policies and practices; developing the capacity of students, faculty and staff to serve the community and the campus through advocacy, education and action that increases sustainability and cares for creation.
