Knight Foundation Gives $5 Million for College Hill Revitalization


Macon will take a major step toward revitalizing College Hill with a new $5 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The grant includes $3 million to the Community Foundation of Central Georgia to fund residents’ best ideas for transforming the neighborhood, and $2 million to Mercer University to form the College Hill Alliance. Both programs are designed to reshape the city’s first neighborhoods into a vibrant college town connected by leafy roads and bike paths to the city’s downtown. [more]

Wal-Mart Foundation Awards Grant to Mercer Center

The Wal-Mart Foundation, as part of its community outreach in Georgia, has awarded Mercer a grant to develop summer seminars for high school teachers to learn how to incorporate the Great Books into their curricula. Through the grant, Mercer’s Center for the Teaching of America’s Western Foundations is developing a summer seminar program and Web site that will help the teachers to understand and teach the Great Books. The two-week seminars will be modeled after Mercer’s Great Books program and be organized around the theme “Citizenship and the Culture of Freedom.” [more]

Dr. Linda Streit Named Interim Dean of College of Nursing

Linda A. Streit, R.N., D.S.N., has been appointed interim dean of the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, effective July 1, Provost Wallace L. Daniel announced May 20. Dr. Streit will succeed Dean Susan S. Gunby, R.N., Ph.D., upon her retirement as dean. Dr. Streit is a tenured professor and associate dean of graduate programs, and she has served as a professor and administrator at the College since 1990. Dr. Gunby, who holds a professorship in the College, will return to full-time teaching upon her retirement as dean. [more]

Family Endows Professorship in Townsend School of Music

The Townsend School of Music has named Dr. Stanley Roberts, associate dean, the inaugural Arthur Lowndes Rich Endowed Professor in Choral Conducting. The late Dr. Arthur Lowndes Rich and his wife Helen Rich established the Department of Music within the College of Liberal Arts at Mercer. The professorship was established to honor their memory through a gift made by their daughter and son-in-law, world-renowned classical pianist Dr. Ruth Anne Rich and her husband, Fred Humphrey. Macon Campus to Host Caring for Creation Conference in Fall


Following the success of the Atlanta Campus’ Caring for Creation conference in the spring, the Macon campus will hold a similar conference addressing the ethical and religious elements of climate change. The conference, titled “Caring For Creation: A Scientific and Theological Response,” will be held Oct. 29-31. The final program is in development, and organizers are urging Macon campus faculty to consider making the conference a part of the semester’s syllabi. [more]

Engineering Launching New Environmental Master’s Degrees

The School of Engineering is launching two new degree programs this fall to help meet the nation’s mounting environmental challenges. In August, the School will welcome its first classes for the Master of Science in Engineering in environmental engineering – for students with engineering degrees – and the Master of Science in environmental systems – aimed at practicing professionals with degrees in other science disciplines. Mercerian Earns First Place Award from Georgia Press Association

Mercer was among the first place winners in the 2009 Better Newspaper Contest, sponsored by the Georgia Press Association. An associate member of the GPA, The Mercerian magazine was awarded first place in the category of “In-House Publication.” [more]

Campus Compact Names Brown as Finalist for National Faculty Award

Campus Compact, a national coalition committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education, has selected Mercer Senior Vice Provost Dr. Peter C. Brown as a finalist for the Thomas Ehrlich Civically Engaged Faculty Award. Dr. Brown, who is also a professor of philosophy and interdisciplinary studies in the College of Liberal Arts, is one of only seven finalists from a group of 53 distinguished nominees for this national award. Recent Graduate Quarles Places Fourth in National Competition

Recent Townsend School of Music graduate Mary Brooke Quarles placed fourth in a recent singing competition in Chicago sponsored by Classical Singer Magazine.  Quarles, who earned her Bachelor of Music degree in performance in May, competed in the university division for singers aged 18-25. The competition was held at the Classical Singer Convention ’09, which featured competitions for promising high school and college-aged singers. [more]

Mercer Athletics to Add Lacrosse to its Division I Program

Mercer will add men’s NCAA Division I lacrosse to its intercollegiate athletic program during the 2010-2011 academic year and will add a Division I women’s team in 2011-2012, Athletic Director Bobby Pope announced June 17. Mercer is the first NCAA Division I institution in the state to announce the addition of lacrosse to its athletic program. [more]

Mercer and Clear Channel Radio Announce Broadcast Partnership

Mercer has announced that Clear Channel Broadcasting Inc. will serve as the flagship radio network for the school’s men’s basketball games in 2009-2010. The broadcaster’s Fox Sports Radio 1670 AM, WFSM, will carry all of the Bears’ games live next season, while sister FM stations, WPCH 96.5 and WZCH 102.5, will also simulcast games that tip off at 6 p.m. or later. In addition, the games will be available on the World Wide Web on the Fox Sports Radio 1670 site at http://www.foxsports1670.com  and the Mercer Web site at http://www.mercerbears.com. [more]
