Business School Receives $1 Million Commitment From BB&T Corp.

BB&T Corp. has pledged $1 million to Mercer's Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics to establish a BB&T Distinguished Professorship of Capitalism and the Center for Undergraduate Research in Public Policy and Capitalism and to continue funding the University’s Executive Forum Presented by BB&T, the University announced March 2. Mercer Unveils Four-Year Graduation Guarantee

With a goal of reducing the cost of a college education for students and their families, Mercer announced on Feb. 16 an initiative called the “Four-Year Pledge” to help more undergraduate students earn their degrees on time. [more]

Mercer Earns Highest Federal Designation for Service

Mercer has earned the highest federal recognition for community engagement, the Corporation for National and Community Service announced on Feb. 9.  For the University’s exemplary service efforts and service to the community, the Corporation named Mercer to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for 2008. Georgia Cancer Coalition Awards Mercer Professors Research Grants

ATLANTA/SAVANNAH — The Georgia Cancer Coalition has awarded two of its eight research grants for 2009 to Mercer faculty. The group awarded $50,000 each to Dr. Martin D’Souza, professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and co-director of the Center for Drug Delivery Research at the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Atlanta, and Dr. Nagendra Ningaraj, a researcher in the Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute of Memorial University Medical Center and associate professor with the Mercer School of Medicine in Savannah. Clinton Global Initiative University Highlights Mercer On Mission

Clinton Foundation – recognized Mercer’s efforts to help amputees in Vietnam and other developing nations as “as an exemplary approach to addressing a specific global challenge” during the organization’s annual conference in Austin, Texas, on Feb. 13. The University’s Mercer On Mission project was one of only four “commitments” by universities around the country to be recognized by President Bill Clinton during the conference’s opening session. ‘STOP Sex Trafficking: A Call to End 21st Century Slavery’ Conference

MACON — Mercer’s national conference on human trafficking, “STOP Sex Trafficking: A Call to End 21st Century Slavery,” is shaping into a major event, organizers say. The conference, to be held March 19-20 in Willingham Auditorium on Mercer’s Macon campus, will feature a number of internationally renowned speakers, and a screening of Call+Response, an anti-trafficking documentary by rock musician and filmmaker Justin Dillon. Mercer Honors First Graduates from Pioneering Early Care Program

McDONOUGH — The first five graduates of Mercer’s Early Care and Education Program, which was established in 2007 as the first in the state to offer a bachelor’s degree and certification, were honored at a ceremony at Mercer’s Henry County Regional Academic Center on Feb. 25. A number of state and regional officials who are at the forefront of early childhood education were also on hand for the event. [more]

Conference: Climate Change A Moral Challenge For All People


ATLANTA — Climate change is real, and there is mounting evidence to suggest that it is caused by human activities and that it will cause major changes to this planet, scientific presenters at a conference at Mercer University said. Faith leaders at the conference challenged participants to re-engage themselves, their faiths and their communities to address the moral and ethical implications of climate change. [more]

Former U.S. Solicitor General to Deliver 2009 Law Day Address

Paul D. Clement, former United States Solicitor General and current partner in the Washington, D.C., office of King & Spalding law firm, is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the annual Law Day luncheon at Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law on March 6. During the visit, the former solicitor general will also give a lecture during a class of first-year Mercer law students. [more]

Legal Writing Institute Renews Contract with Law School

Mercer’s Walter F. George School of Law will remain the host law school for the Legal Writing Institute until at least 2016, renewing a previous five-year contract that began in 2003. [more]

Health Outcomes Expert to Deliver 2009 Van Greene Lecture

J. Lyle Bootman, Ph.D., dean of The University of Arizona College of Pharmacy, will deliver the 2009 G. Van Greene Distinguished Lecture at 11 a.m. on March 19 at the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences on the Atlanta campus. Dr. Bootman will speak on “Value-Based Health Care: The Role of Pharmaceuticals for the 21st Century.” The lecture is free and open to the public. [more]
