Trustees Approve Budget, Degree Programs, Promotions

On April 17, the University’s Board of Trustees approved a $181.3 million operating budget for the next fiscal year, a $9.4 million, or 5.5 percent, increase over the current budget. The Board also approved several new academic programs and approved tenure and promotions for faculty. [more]

Mercer to Hold Nine Commencements In May

Approximately 1,700 students will be recognized during the University's graduation ceremonies on its Macon and Atlanta campuses in May. President William D. Underwood will confer bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees during nine commencements, and graduates will hear from an array of distinguished speakers. [more]

Western Michigan’s Shields Appointed Dean Of Business School

On April 8, President William D. Underwood announced the appointment of David Shields, Ph.D., CPA, dean of the Haworth College of Business and professor of accounting at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, as dean of Mercer’s Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics, effective July 1. [more]

Law School Team Wins Elite ABA Trial Advocacy Competition

In remarkable fashion, a mock trial team at Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law captured first place in the American Bar Association’s National Criminal Justice Trial Advocacy Competition, defeating Harvard and the University of Houston law schools in the semifinals and finals respectively. In addition, third-year Mercer law student Katie Powers was crowned the competition’s “Best Advocate” and “Best Cross-Examiner.” By winning the overall championship and individual honors, Mercer Law School took home the competition’s three most coveted awards. University Sets Spring Enrollment Record

The University set a spring enrollment record, surpassing last year’s total by 547 students. Based on official 15th class day numbers, Mercer has enrolled 7,591 students this spring, 7.8 percent more than the comparable period last year. [more]

Kimble Named Piedmont Chair at Georgia Baptist College of Nursing

The Georgia Baptist College of Nursing announced April 14 that it has named Laura P. Kimble, Ph.D., R.N., currently an associate professor of nursing at Georgia State University, as the College’s inaugural Piedmont Healthcare Endowed Chair in Nursing, effective July 1. The appointment follows an extensive national search for an outstanding academic scholar who will have a vital role in advancing the new Ph.D. in nursing, which begins this fall. [more]

Model Arab League Delegation Wins National Championship

A team of 13 Mercer University students took home top honors from the National Model Arab League Conference in Washington, D.C., recently. The team, representing the country of Lebanon, outperformed delegations from 24 other universities in 17 states – and one foreign country – to claim The Outstanding Delegation Award. Mercer is now considered the reigning national champion for this invitation-only annual event. [more]

Faculty Honored at Awards Ceremony

Several of the University’s schools and colleges presented awards to outstanding faculty at the end of the year during the University’s faculty recognition ceremony on April 3. Ann C. Keeley, assistant professor of nursing in the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, and Lana M. Chase, assistant professor of nursing in the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, shared the top award. Keeley and Chase were presented with the Innovations in Teaching Award, which is co-sponsored by the Vulcan Materials Co. It was the first time that faculty outside of the Macon campus were eligible to compete for the award. [more]

New Ph.D. Aims to Create High-Performing Educators

The Tift College of Education is launching a new Ph.D. program in curriculum and instruction this fall that will help experienced teachers upgrade their own skills and become influential instructors and researchers within their schools, school systems and communities. [more]

McAfee Adds Global Christianity Concentration

The McAfee School of Theology has added a new concentration in global Christianity to its Master of Divinity program. The concentration will help students explore and address the critical aspects of Christianity’s “shift southward” in the 21st Century and to train new ministers to work in this dynamic environment. Lacey Named Governor’s Teaching Fellow

Dr. Karen O’Neill Lacey, assistant professor of English in the College of Continuing and Professional Studies, has been selected for the Governor’s Teaching Fellows 2009-2010 academic-year symposium. Dr. Lacey will be one of only 15 faculty members from colleges and universities across Georgia to participate in the academic-year program. Dr. Lacey is also the second College of Continuing Professional Studies professor to be selected for the prestigious fellowship.
