Mercer Enrollment Tops 8,000, Sets University Record

Mercer’s first-day fall enrollment figures topped the 8,000 mark, a 6.8 percent increase over opening day numbers last fall and an all-time record for the 176-year-old institution. Final, official enrollment figures will not be completed until later in the fall, but the opening day tally stood at 8,044, compared with 7,533 on the first day of classes last year – a 511-student increase. NEH Awards Grant to Mercer for Institute on Southern History

MACON — The National Endowment for the Humanities has awarded $215,000 to Mercer for an institute for high school teachers in summer 2010. The institute will be a five-week course on Southern history, titled “Cotton Culture in the South from the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement,” and will be open to 22 high school teachers from across the country. U.S. News Again Ranks Mercer Among Top 10 Schools in the South

MACON — For the 11th consecutive year, Mercer has made the Top 10 in U.S. News & World Report’s annual ranking of comprehensive universities in the South.  Mercer is ranked No. 8 in the South in the 2010 “Best Universities-Master’s” category. The University has for 20 consecutive years been ranked in the top 15 in that category, which includes institutions that provide a full range of undergraduate and master’s programs, and few, if any, doctoral programs. More than 500 universities are ranked within four geographic areas – North, South, Midwest and West. [more]

Pharmacy Appoints Taylor to Develop Physical Therapy Doctorate

Mercer’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences intends to launch a doctoral-level program in physical therapy next fall and has appointed Leslie F. Taylor, PT, Ph.D., former division head of the physical therapy program at Georgia State University, to develop and implement the new program on the Atlanta campus. [more]

Lecture Series to Focus on Contrasts of Modern, Ancient Republics

Mercer’s Center for the Teaching of America’s Western Foundations will hold its second annual lecture series on the Macon campus, including three lectures in the fall and a conference in the spring, all built around the theme, “Republics Ancient and Modern.”  The series will feature some of the nation’s most renowned scholars in the history of political thought, organizers say. McAfee to Hold Ginn Lectures on Christian Faith and Modern Science

Mercer’s McAfee School of Theology will hold the second annual D. Perry and Betty Ginn Lecture Series on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 10:45 a.m. in the Cecil B. Day Hall on the Atlanta campus. The lecturer will be Dr. Robert J. Russell, an expert on the relationship between faith and science. His topic will be “Scientific Cosmology, Philosophy and Creation Theology: Creative Mutual Interactions.” [more]

Homecoming Game Again to be Televised into Millions of Homes

More than 3,000 Mercer fans packed out the University Center when Georgia Tech came calling for last year’s Homecoming game – an overtime thriller. This year for Homecoming, the Bears welcome Florida State, one of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s most improved teams. Just part of a week of exciting activities, the Homecoming game will once again be televised into some 12 million households on Fox Sports Net, with tip-off set for 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21. Family Weekend to be Held Sept. 18-20

Mercer’s annual Family Weekend will be held Sept. 18-20 on the Macon campus and, for the first time, will be run by Campus Life. Previously, the event was held later in the fall and organized by Mercer’s Student Government Association. [more]

Caring for Creation Conference Launches Web Site

Mercer’s conference exploring the links between faith and science, titled “Caring for Creation: A Scientific and Theological Response,” has launched a Web site featuring information on the conference, as well as registration forms. The site is www.mercer.edu/caring. [more]

Political Science Lecture Series Focuses on the Post-Cold War Era

The 11th Annual College of Liberal Arts Lecture Series begins this month and focuses on the theme “Leftovers: 20 Years After the Wall Came Down, Reflections on a Post-Cold War World.” The six-lecture series features professors from across the University delivering lectures focused on the aftermath of the Cold War. The first speaker in the series, Dr. Chris Grant, associate professor of political science, will lecture on “Frozen Conflicts in Moldova and Georgia” at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 9, in the Choir Rehearsal Room of the McCorkle Music Building on Mercer’s Macon campus. Pharmacy’s Kappa Psi Chapter Named National Chapter of the Year

ORLANDO, Fla. — At the recent Kappa Psi National Pharmacy Fraternity Grand Council Convention in Orlando, Mercer University’s Gamma Psi Chapter and its members received multiple awards.  For the first time in its history, Mercer’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences chapter was recognized as the Top Collegiate Chapter in the nation.
