Grand Opera House Announces 2008-2009 Broadway Series

The Grand Opera House, a performing arts center of the University, will present a “supersized” lineup for the 2008-2009 season.  Subscription renewals for existing season ticket holders are currently being processed, and new subscriptions will go on sale in July. The upcoming Broadway Series will include the following:

Trustees Approve 10-Year Plan, Set Budget for 2008-09

On April 18, the Board of Trustees of Mercer endorsed a new vision statement and an ambitious 10-year strategic plan for the University that calls for more than $1.2 billion in new investments in the institution’s endowment, faculty and staff, facilities and technology, and academic and co-curricular programs over the next decade. Mercer Students Assist China's Earthquake Victims

CHONGQING, China — Mercer University nursing, public health, science and pre-med students, visiting China as participants in the Mercer On Mission program, embraced the victims of China’s recent earthquake with personal care packages and hospital visits in Chongqing this week. [more]

Mercer Faculty and Staff Mobilize to Help Those Stricken by Tornadoes

More than 75 Mercer faculty and staff members came out to offer a hand to other staffers and their families following the Mother’s Day tornadoes that ripped through Middle Georgia, causing more than $100 million in damage. A number of homes owned by Mercer staffers in western Macon and Lizella were damaged. [more]

Laffer, Fleming Named Distinguished University Professors

President William D. Underwood has announced the appointments of economics icon Arthur B. Laffer Sr. and retiring Provost Horace W. Fleming to the positions of Distinguished University Professors. Underwood made the announcement of Laffer as Distinguished University Professor of Economics at the May 17 commencement of the Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics in Atlanta. Fleming’s appointment as Distinguished University Professor of Educational Leadership was announced by the president at the May 10 undergraduate commencement on the Macon campus. [more]

Mercer Awarded Major Grant for Redevelopment Alliance

Redevelopment efforts in downtown Macon and the surrounding neighborhoods have received a major boost from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Mercer has been awarded a $250,000 planning grant from Knight Foundation to facilitate a voluntary alliance of redevelopment partners to coordinate plans and leverage new investments. The grant was announced June 6 by Macon Mayor Robert A. B. Reichert and Mercer President William D. Underwood during a news conference at Mercer Village, 1645 Montpelier Ave. [more]

Ingleside Village Pizza Sign of Things to Come for College Hill Corridor

More than 100 Mercer students, faculty and staff joined President William D. Underwood and a number of city officials to celebrate the opening of the second location of Ingleside Village Pizza on Montpelier Avenue, adjacent to the Macon campus. The April 23 event also marked the first step in realizing the University’s and the College Hill Corridor Commission’s vision for the retail area along Montpelier, which borders the north side of campus. The commercial center, currently under development, will be called the Mercer Village and will eventually include a number of college-friendly businesses. [more]

Morgan Named Senior Vice Provost For Service-Learning

On May 2, President William D. Underwood announced the appointment of Mary Alice Morgan, Ph.D., professor of English and director of Women’s and Gender Studies, to the position of senior vice provost for service-learning, effective July 1. [more]

Eight Mercer Graduates to Serve Others in National Programs

 Eight Mercer University graduates have been selected to participate in two highly selective national and international service programs upon graduation on May 10. Rizza Ibanez, of Milledgeville, Ga., will enter the Peace Corps, while seven other members of the class of 2008 will participate in Teach For America, the rigorous and nationally competitive program that places top college graduates in low-income schools across the nation. Dalton Appointed Senior Vice President for Enrollment Management

On April 24, President William D. Underwood announced the appointment of Brian Dalton as senior vice president for enrollment management, effective July 1. Dalton, currently vice president for enrollment management and associate academic dean for program development at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn., succeeds Terry Whittum, who recently resigned to return to Florida for personal reasons. Professional Education Programs Earn National Accreditation

Along with its regional and state accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, Tift College of Education of Mercer University has received national accreditation for all of its programs from The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.  NCATE, the national organization responsible for professional accreditation of teacher education, notified the College of its new status on May 1. Homecoming, Lecture by President Carter Coming this Fall

The fall semester will offer two outstanding events for students and alumni. Former United States President Jimmy Carter will be the featured speaker of the 2008 President’s Lecture Series at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23,on the Macon campus. Homecoming Week will move from winter to fall and feature numerous events, including a men’s basketball game on Saturday, Nov. 22, with the Bears facing off with a national basketball powerhouse in the University Center Arena. Commencements Result In More Than 1,500 New Alumni

Mercer graduated more than 1,500 students from 11 schools and colleges during 10 commencements in May in Macon and Atlanta. Among the many highlights was the address given by Mercer Trustee and popular television show host Nancy Grace at the main Macon commencement on May 10 in the University Center. In her speech, she spoke on how the death of her fiancé changed the course of her studies and her life.  [more]

School Counseling Master’s Coming This Fall in Atlanta

The College of Continuing and Professional Studies, in partnership with the Tift College of Education, will offer the Master of Science in School Counseling program for individuals desiring a career in school counseling on the Atlanta campus, with classes beginning in August.  For those who already have a master’s degree in counseling, the college will have an add-on certificate program in School Counseling. Pending Georgia Professional Standards Commission certification, both programs will prepare counselors to address Georgia’s efforts not only to meet the needs of its growing elementary, middle and high school populations, but also to help students remain in school... Nursing Graduate Programs Re-Focused on Areas of Critical Need

The Georgia Baptist College of Nursing will offer two focuses in its Master of Science in Nursing program: the Nurse Educator and the Clinical Nurse Specialist. Both programs are taught on Mercer’s Cecil B. Day Atlanta campus, with classes beginning August 18. [more]

On May 1, Sharon L. Nieb became the executive director of the Center for Health and Learning, a center of excellence established by Piedmont Healthcare and Mercer University in 2005 to provide solutions to today’s challenges in healthcare delivery, education and research. [more]
