Board of Trustees Approve New Degree Programs, Elects New Trustees and Officers

Mercer's Board of Trustees during its annual meeting on Nov. 19 approved several new undergraduate and graduate degree programs, elected 12 new members – including two Life Trustees -- and chose new officers for 2011. [more]

National Analysis: Medical School Ranks High in Graduates in Underserved Areas

A recently released study shows that the Mercer School of Medicine is one of the most successful schools in the nation at producing physicians that practice in rural areas, shortage areas, primary care, family medicine, and low-income areas. The study found that Mercer, whose mission since it was established more than 25 years ago has been to prepare primary care physicians for rural and underserved areas of the state, ranks second in the nation in the percentage of graduates practicing in low-income areas of the school’s home state. University Sets Enrollment Record, Tops 8,200 Students

Topping an enrollment record set a year ago, Mercer University has established another record for total enrollment this fall, with the University-wide student population up 2 percent to 8,236 students. Fall 2009 was the first time the University’s enrollment had gone above 8,000 students. [more]

Mercer Trustees Vote to Reinstate Intercollegiate Football


The sights and sounds of intercollegiate football will be returning to the Mercer campus after a 70-year absence. On Nov. 19, the University’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved a plan to resume competition in football in the fall of 2013. [more]

Stetson Law Crowned Winner of Mercer Law School’s Moot Court Competition

ercer Law School held the nation's first moot court competition in legal ethics and professionalism Nov. 12-13, and Stetson University College of Law was crowned its 2010 winner, defeating Liberty University School of Law in the final round. A member of Florida Coastal School of Law’s team was named best oralist. [more]

Binary Bears Win 2010 CCSC Programming Competition Title

Mercer's Binary Bears top computer programming team finished first in the Southeastern Small College Programming Contest on Nov. 13. Sponsored by the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges, the competition was held at Spelman College. [more]

University and East-West Center Partner to Create Asian Studies Minor at Mercer

Mercer is part of a five-school consortium from around the country that will add an Asian Studies minor through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to the East-West Center at the University of Hawaii-Manoa. The East-West Center, in collaboration with the five schools, will help them to add minors over three years and is part of the Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language grant program. Tift Expands Graduate Offerings in Forsyth County and Douglas County  

The Tift College of Education will expand two graduate programs to new metro Atlanta locations in January. The College will offer its hybrid-format Master of Education in early childhood education in Forsyth County and the Education Specialist in teacher leadership at the University’s Douglas County Regional Academic Center. Mercer to Launch Executive-Format Master of Science in Public Safety Leadership

The College of Continuing and Professional Studies will launch an executive-format Master of Science in Public Safety Leadership degree in January. Courses in the new format are delivered online with the exception of two weekend sessions per 16-week term. The weekend sessions will initially be offered at Mercer’s Henry County Regional Academic Center. Pending new site approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the classes will move to the Georgia Department of Corrections’ new headquarters at State Offices South at Tift College in the city of Forsyth in August. Rand Institute President to Speak at Mercer in Atlanta

The president of the Ayn Rand Institute, Dr. Yaron Brook, will deliver a lecture at Mercer on Monday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. The lecture, titled “Capitalism without Guilt: The Moral Case for Freedom,” is free and open to the public and will be held in the University’s Atlanta Administration and Conference Center, 2930 Flowers Road South.
