Many New Activities in the Mix for Homecoming 2010


As if the first two fall modern-day Homecomings have not been exciting enough, even more activities have been added for 2010. Thousands of Mercerians have returned to campus for the past two years to enjoy the many aspects of the fall event and to watch the Bears play Georgia Tech and Florida State in men’s basketball. This year, not only will the men take on the Crimson of Harvard in a Saturday afternoon (Nov. 20) clash, but the women’s team’s schedule this year will allow them to join in the action as they will host Furman on Friday, Nov. 19, at 5:30 p.m. in the University Center. Mercer Student Team Helps Search for Lost Colony


Mercer history professor Dr. Eric Klingelhofer and six Mercer students traveled to Roanoke Island, N.C., over fall break to dig into a firsthand archeological experience and help in the search for the lost colony that vanished from the island more than 400 years ago. The trip also marked the first time that a Mercer student team was able to participate in a dig at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. [more]

Mercer Receives $1.1 Million Grant for Student Support

The United States Department of Education has awarded a $1.1 million grant to Mercer to provide support services for up to 140 students per year for five years. The support will be offered to first-generation college students, students with disabilities and Pell-grant eligible students on the Macon campus. [more]

Mercer to Hold Nation’s First Moot Court Ethics and Professionalism Competition

Mercer Law School will hold the nation’s first moot court competition in legal ethics and professionalism on Nov. 12-13. Sixteen teams from law schools across the country are scheduled to participate in the competition. [more]

Princeton Review: Mercer Law, Business Among America’s Best Graduate Programs

The Princeton Review has again named Mercer’s law and business programs among the nation’s best, announcing Oct. 12 that the Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics was listed in its guidebook, Best 300 Business Schools: 2011 Edition, and that the Walter F. George School of Law was listed in Best 172 Law Schools: 2011 Edition. [more]

Prestigious Journal Names Mercer Professor ‘Artist of the Month’

IMAGE Journal named Mercer associate professor Anya Silver as its “Artist of the Month” for October. IMAGE is a national literary publication dedicated to supporting and showcasing art shaped by the faith traditions of western civilization. Dr. Silver is an English professor and poet and has published several poems in the journal. She is also celebrating the publication this month of her first book of poetry, The Ninety-Third Name of God, by the Louisiana State University Press. [more]

Mercer Administrator Named State Educator of the Year

The Georgia Association on Young Children has named Mercer administrator Dr. Penny L. Elkins as its Educator of the Year for the state. GAYC is a non-profit professional organization that promotes quality early care and education for young children. [more]

Leading Pollster to Speak at Mercer’s Executive Forum on Nov. 4  

Mercer’s Executive Forum, presented by BB&T, will feature Frank Luntz, the most quoted pollster in America, on Nov. 4 in Atlanta and Macon. He will give lunch presentation at the Capital City Club at 12:30 p.m. and a dinner presentation at 6:30 p.m. in the Presidents Dining Room of the University Center. [more]

‘Baptist Mother Teresa,’ Lavanya, To Speak at Mercer in Macon and Atlanta

Leena Lavanya, founder of ServeTrust, a charity ministering to the poor in Southern India, will speak at Mercer in Macon and Atlanta on Tuesday and Wednesday. Known as the “Baptist Mother Teresa,” Lavanya’s ministry has helped thousands in India and inspired others around the world. [more]

Mercer Once Again Selected to Host A-Sun Basketball Championships  


Mercer has again been selected as the host site for the General Shale Brick Atlantic Sun Conference Basketball Championships – for both men and women – for the 2012 and 2013 season at the University Center. The deal, announced in October, will extend the Tournament’s stay in Macon by two years. In addition to hosting the 2010 A-Sun Championships, Mercer was already slated to host this year’s tournament. New-Look Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams Ready for Seasons

Mercer’s men’s and women’s basketball teams will start the season this month with several new faces, including a new women’s coaching staff, led by Susie Gardner, and eight new players on the men’s side. [more]

Brittany Lee Named Executive Director of the Mercer Athletic Foundation  

Brittany Morgan Lee has been appointed as the first full-time executive director of the Mercer Athletic Foundation, according to John Patterson, Mercer senior vice president for university advancement.  Most recently, Lee worked for the Atlanta Braves organization in corporate partnerships and sales, where she was responsible for business partnerships in the Southeast and activation of clients’ marketing requests, including signage, displays, promotions and hospitality.
