Three New Deans Begin Tenures Today  

Three new academic deans began their tenures today. Dr. Lake Lambert at the College of Liberal Arts and Dr. Linda Streit at the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, whose appointments were previously covered in News@Mercer, join Gary J. School of Medicine Earns High Marks in Recent Study

The Mercer School of Medicine received significant recognition in the recently released study of medical school graduates of 1999-2001 published in the June 15 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine. Mercer was ranked No. 8 among the nation’s 141 medical schools in Primary Care Output, No. 30 in the nation in Health Professional Shortage Area Physician Output and No. 41 in the nation in medical school rankings based on Social Mission Score. Jennings Family Endows Chair for the McDuffie Center for Strings

On May 12, President William D. Underwood announced the establishment of the Mansfield and Genelle Jennings Distinguished University Chair in Music in the Townsend School of Music’s McDuffie Center for Strings. The gift establishing the endowed chair comes on the heels of two recently endowed funds: the Helen Wall Rich Endowed Professorship in Keyboard Performance and The G. Leslie Fabian Endowed Chair of Music. [more]

Banga Named Inaugural T.P. Haines Chair at College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

President William D. Underwood and College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Dean H.W. “Ted” Matthews have announced the establishment of the T.P. Haines Endowed Chair in Transdermal Delivery Systems; Dr. Ajay K. Banga, professor and chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, is the inaugural holder of the endowed position. [more]

President Presented J.M. Dawson Religious Liberty Award

The Washington-based Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty presented its J.M. Dawson Religious Liberty Award to Mercer University President William D. Underwood during the organization’s annual Religious Liberty Council Luncheon in Charlotte, N.C., on June 25 during the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship General Assembly. Also receiving the Dawson Award at the luncheon was the Rev. Dr. Gardner Taylor, one of the founders of the Progressive National Baptist Convention and a religious leader during the Civil Rights Movement. [more]

Engineering Professors Conducting Research for NASA this Summer  

Two professors from Mercer University’s School of Engineering have earned fellowships to conduct research with NASA this summer. Dr. Behnam Kamali, professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Dr. Loren R. Sumner, associate professor of mechanical engineering, left June 7 to participate in the NASA Faculty Fellowship Program at Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. [more]

Atlanta Business Chronicle Recognizes Dr. Ha Van Vo as Health-Care Hero

The Atlanta Business Chronicle presented Dr. Ha Van Vo, associate professor of biomedical engineering at Mercer University, with its 2010 Health-Care Heroes Award for Innovation during the paper’s 13th annual awards program in Atlanta on May 20. [more]

Mercer’s International Programs Director Visits Korea on Fulbright Grant

Dr. Eric Spears, Mercer’s director of international programs, recently returned from a two-week tour of Korea and Korean universities, through the Fulbright Program for International Educational Administrators program. Dr. Spears was one of only eight finalists selected from a national pool of applicants, including finalists from Princeton University, San Francisco State University, George Mason University, the University of Minnesota and North Carolina State University. Two Mercer Press Authors Win Statewide Awards

Two Mercer University Press authors won awards in their respective categories at the 46th Annual Georgia Author of the Year Awards, presented by the Georgia Writers Association at a ceremony held at Kennesaw State University Center on June 19. Mercer business and law professor James L. Hunt won the award for creative nonfiction – biography and Philip Lee Williams won the award for fiction. [more]

Baseball Team Claims Conference Championship, Earns Spot in NCAA Tournament  

The Mercer baseball team won its first Atlantic Sun Championship since 1983 and clinched the University’s first-ever NCAA tournament berth with a 7-3 win over Jacksonville May 29 at Lipscomb University's Dugan Field at Marsh Stadium. The A-Sun Championship is the fourth baseball championship for Mercer since capturing the title in 1979, 1981 and 1983. [more]

Gardner Named Women’s Basketball Head Coach

Mercer has named veteran NCAA Division I coach Susie Gardner as the University’s new women’s basketball head coach. Gardner was introduced as the Bears’ mentor at a news conference in the University Center on June 24. [more]

Mercer Alumnus Featured on International Radio Broadcast: ‘From The Top’

Keitaro Harada, Mercer graduate and former conductor of the Mercer/Macon Symphony Youth Orchestra, was a featured guest on National Public Radio’s “From The Top” on June 17 and June 20. “From the Top” is the hit NPR radio program featuring America’s best young classical musicians and hosted by acclaimed pianist Christopher O’Riley. America’s Favorite Family Musical, ‘Cats,’ Returns to The Grand

The show that revolutionized musical theater, “Cats,” will be performed at The Grand Opera House on July 27-28 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets go on sale Tuesday, July 6, at 10 a.m. and can be purchased through Mercer Ticket Sales at (478) 301-5470 or online at www.TheGrandMacon.com.
