Basketball Teams Going Strong Into Big Winter Match-ups

Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams are off to successful starts in the 2008-09 season. The men, under first-year head coach Bob Hoffman, are 6-3 with major upsets only three days apart at Alabama and at Auburn. The Bears, who are 1-1 in Atlantic Sun Conference play, almost pulled off a third major upset in the same week before falling to Georgia Tech, in overtime, in front of a standing-room-only Homecoming crowd at the University Center.

The men continue their daunting non-conference slate this month when they travel to Oklahoma State, Dec. 17; UCLA, Dec. 20; Loyola-Marymount, Dec. 22; and Iowa State, Dec. 31.

The women, led by second-year head coach Janell Jones, are 5-2 and sport a 2-0 A-Sun Conference mark following a huge upset over defending conference champion and pre-season favorite East Tennessee State University. In December, the women will also log several thousand air miles and face stiff competition when they travel to Florida State, Dec. 14; the Bahamas to meet Florida Atlantic and East Carolina, Dec. 18-19; and then to Wichita State, Dec. 29.
