Thousands Participate in Homecoming Events


MACON – Mercer celebrated its second successful fall Homecoming Weekend, Nov. 20-22, with nearly 1,000 alumni returning to “Celebrate the Legends” to celebrate with friends and reminisce about their time at Mercer. Several thousand students, faculty, staff and community members joined in the celebrations and in packing the University Center for the Bears battle with the Florida State Seminoles. A sold-out arena cheered the Bears’ valiant effort against one of the strongest - and tallest - teams in country. [more]

Florence Closing in on Scoring Mark as Bears Begin Conference Play

History is in the making as the Mercer men’s basketball team takes a break from its non-conference schedule the first week of December for a couple of key conference tilts against Nashville foes Lipscomb and Belmont. The Bears are 3-3 on the season after a successful trip to Providence, R.I., where coach Bob Hoffman’s team came within two points of winning the World Vision Invitational Tournament. During the tournament, senior James Florence began his march toward becoming Mercer’s all-time leading scorer. As the first game of the season tipped off, “Flo” needed 249 points to tie the legendary Sam Mitchell. [more]

Governor Names Administrator to Georgia Professional Standards Commission

Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue has named Dr. Penny L. Elkins as a teacher education faculty representative on the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, the organization that oversees all teacher certification for the state, as well as the accreditation of all teacher education programs in the state. She will be one of only two such representatives on the board. [more]
