Tift College of Education celebrated its articulation agreement with the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education at a ceremony on Oct. 17 in the Atlanta Administration and Conference Center. The College signed the articulation agreement with the Department last year, making it easier for teachers and potential educators to progress from entry-level certificate and associate programs and continue on to bachelor’s degree programs at the College.
Differences in accreditation and affiliation structures among teacher education programs can make it difficult for learners to move forward with their education, this agreement will help alleviate those difficulties. “We are pleased that we could facilitate an agreement between the College and DTAE to establish guidelines for a seamless transfer of credit for education and some general coursework for candidates wishing to further their education,” said Dr. Penny L. Elkins, associate dean and Fred L. Miles Chair of Educational Leadership. Candidates graduating with an associate’s degree in education from an accredited DTAE institution should encounter a more streamlined process should they decide to continue in a bachelor’s degree program at the Tift College of Education. Candidates must still meet application requirements and satisfy all general education requirements specific to the University.
This articulation agreement comes on the heels of the College’s successful new early care and education baccalaureate program. In response to the increasing demand for educated childcare professionals, and familiar with Tift’s reputation for innovation, the Georgia Professional Standards Commission asked the College to lead the development of curricula to meet certification standards for birth through five programs.
The Professional Standards Commission and Georgia’s Department of Early Care and Learning have given the College $680,000 over the past three years in support of Mercer’s Early Care and Education program. The new articulation agreement will be of great value to childcare providers moving through a professional development system by providing a systematic approach for collaborative, inclusive, accessible education programs.
