Mercer Lacrosse Returns to League Conference Play

Following a one-game exhibition contest last year to renew the sport at Mercer, the University’s men’s club lacrosse team has been probationally accepted into the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference to begin play in January. This past February, under the direction of faculty adviser Emory Dunn, a team of 40 players suited up for Mercer’s first lacrosse competition since the mid-1990s against the Metro Atlanta Inferno.

The team, in its second season as a club sport at Mercer, had already arranged a fall season for 2008 before learning a few days ago of their acceptance into the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference. Remaining games this fall include: Oct. 4 against Savannah College of Art and Design; Oct. 18 against Kennesaw State; Nov. 1 at the University of North Florida; Nov. 8 against Jacksonville University; and Nov. 22 against Augusta State.

The team will soon receive its schedule for a full slate of games in the new conference. The squad, competing as a probationary team, will not be eligible for ranking or post-season play. The team will play its home games on Bear Field, the Mercer soccer field. For more information about the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference, visit http://www.selc.org/index.php.

Lacrosse is one sport among several that Mercer is considering adding in the future at the intercollegiate level in non-scholarship competition.
