As Atlantic Sun Conference basketball play reaches the mid-point of the season, players, coaches and fans are beginning to look toward Macon and the University Center. The road to March Madness for both men and women will begin on the floor of the University Center Arena. For the first time ever, Mercer will host the A-Sun Men’s and Women’s Conference Championships at the University Center March 3-6. Many of the games will be televised to a regional market and the men’s championship game will be aired live on ESPN on Saturday, March 6.
The top eight teams from the regular season for both men and women will qualify for the tournament. With a month to go in the regular season, both the men’s and women’s regular season races for seeding, the term “upset” disappeared many games ago. Literally, any team can beat another on any given night and teams prove that almost nightly as the conference standings seesaw back and forth with each round of conference play.
Both Mercer teams are currently in the running for the regular season conference championships. Remaining home games in the regular season include: Jan. 30 double-header against Stetson, women at 1 p.m. and the men at 3:30 p.m.; Feb. 1 double-header against Florida Gulf Coast, women at 6:30 p.m. and men at 9 p.m. (televised game); Feb. 8 double-header against USC-Upstate, 5 and 7:30 p.m.; Jan. 18 double-header against the University of North Florida, 5 and 7:30 p.m.; and Feb. 20 double-header against Jacksonville, 5 and 7:30 p.m.
